I've got a SS Mod.7 in .308, 20" bbl., sporter contour (.560 at the muzzle). I'm thinking about screwing on a 7mm08 and was wondering which of the Mod.700 bbl. profiles would be the closest or if in fact, any of them are the same. I'd like to go 21" on the 7mm08 bbl. and don't know if the Mountain Rifle profile would be closest or if there was something else. I've spent the last few decades dealing mostly with Winchesters and Rugers and am just not up on the Rems.
I realize that a straight swap for a Mod.7 7mm-o8 bbl. would probably be the way to go but they don't seem to be nearly as plentiful as the various 700 take-offs (especially SS) and I'd kinda like the extra inch. Got a friend here in S.C that can do the switch so I'd be into it for basically the cost of the take-off if I go this route.

Thanks, John

I would go 700 mtn.
Yes, a MR tube will get you there. That said, I screwed on a Remington 700 sporter contour, because I find the M7 too barrel light.
700 Mountain would have the closest contour. I've rebarreled several Remington Sevens with 22" 700 MR barrels to improve the balance, as I prefer neutral balanced rifles to the butt-heavy 20" barreled Sevens.

For added "cool factor", a 700 LVSF barrel would be the way to go, if you could find one.

I have a used 24" 700 BDL stainless 7mm-08 take-off barrel around somewhere. If you're not in a hurry, I could look it up and shoot you a price.
