What gives.?? does anybody but remington make a rifle with sights?? What happened ?? I perfer a rifle with iron sights even if I'm gonna go with some glass..at least for back-up..
BTW I'm refering to bolt guns still in production..
Robert...
Savage has several models with iron sights. I believe Sako still makes one also.
savage....can't stand there new trigger...I already have a sako classic...then again I can't shoot open sights worth a crap anyways.....
Robert.........
I guess if I need back-up theres always my .44dw....and some good running shoes...
I carry an extra rifle with scope for a backup. All of my rifles have scopes because I am better with a scope than iron sights. Mostly because nearsighted and old!
I actually take off iron sights as soon as possible because I like the clean look and I don't want to see the sights in my 2 or 3 power view. And it hangs on things like scabbords and brush.
Nope, I don't miss iron sights. Even my turkey gun is scoped.

most of the open sights that I have seen on new rifles are there for cosmetic purposes totally worthless to hunt with. I beleive the gun manf, feel they could save 25 cent's per unit by not putting plastic crap on them. prolly 99% of new gunbuyers would take off a good set anyway and mount a scope...
At least they could offer each model with sights or drilled and tapped so we could mount our own.
i havent seen much in the way of good irons on new guns, atleast not that i would seriously hunt with. if im going to use irons its going to be a peep or appeture sight. the iron sights that are on the Remmy model 7 youth i recently purchased are a joke and will be taken off shortly. im going to put a ghost ring sight on my Marlin 1895G. i like irons for sertain guns and a clean barrel for others. i dont generally need back up irons cause i always have a second rifle out hunting with me.
I carry a spare too...however if I 'm a couple miles from the truck and my scope goes south (which has happened ) I like the idea of quick mounts..yank it off and slip it into your pack ( or chuck it into a lake)..and I'm still hunting..
good point. i still think even the irons on remmys are pretty poor and if yah want backup sights these should be replaced with something sturdier.
RLB,
Rifle buying public overall demands the cleaner looks of no iron sights for guns that are scoped 99.99999999% of the time. Its just marketing.
Even if durability were not an issue, I can't stand the sight picture that most factory delivered offerings provide. Semi-buckhorn, little U shaped notches, tiny bead front sights, yech!
Gimme a sight picture like that from a set of Bo-Mars on a custom 45, just scale the dimensions of the notch and blade to be appropriate for a rifle. Then I'd be interested in iron sights for back up.
I agree Iron sights can't compare with glass..BUT if your scope fogs or you drop and it POI is shot to hell..at that point that slick sightless rifle is worthless...granted you will be handicaped as far as distance and pin point accuracy with iron sights but you still can hunt..
roll call
ruger 77 mkII .257 roberts no sights yet....nikon prostaff 3x9
sako classic .30-06 three leaf express sights...luepold vxIII 3x9..
winchester trapper 94 .44 magnum ORH rear peep and partidge front sight...alaskan guide 1.5x5..
ruger dsp..fire sights..nikno 2x7..
styer luxus 7x57 island rear and ramp front..2x7 leupold.
As you can see all I need is iron on the 77 I was thinking about a custom rigby rear peep and hooded partridge front..looks wicked
I feel resticted with the 77 I perfer iron and good glass..
Robert..
I belive that iorn sights are moer common on european rifles. Both Sauer, CZ, Sako, Steyer-manlicher, Blaser and Zoli comes with iron sights. Regarding to the quality of the iron sights, I think the problem in most cases is the shape of the cheak piece. Most rifles to day are prepeared for scope, so the stock is to high for effective use of iron sights.
Recently I have begun to seriously use iron sights for my hunting. It really started when I took the scopes off of my hunting handguns and has progressed to at least some of my rifles. This season I took deer using the express sights on my .375 H&H and with a tang mounted peep sight on my 30-30 Model 94. I think I will be doing more of the same in the future if old eyes will continue to cooperate.
