The partial depth hole forward (to the right) of the recoil lug?
What sort of rifle, praytell, is that hole in?
That almost looks like a barrel nut with a hole for a spanner wrench. I could be wrong.
That occurred to me, but looks kinda sloppy for something done on purpose. Might go into the barrel.
I sent a picture to the manufacturer asking them what it is. A place for a spanner to bite makes sense. It is sloppy though.

Looks like a Remington 700 to me... Did the bolt handle fall off and trigger snap too. The extractor hanging on by a fingernail?. Wait, it is a fingernail.. Carry on..
An index mark to shorten the the process of setting the head-space when swapping barrels? I would agree that whatever it is, it does look sloppy.
A hole to install a pressure sensor? Or maybe a hole for the barrel nut wrench?
Looks like a hole for a spanner wrench on a barrel but, partially filled with I hope is grease but looks like epoxy.

that's what I'm thinking - looks to be a barrel nut on that barrel, or some odd profile I've never seen...
It looks like the barrel nut has a small hole that aligns with a detent drilled in the barrel.
Tighten the nut and lock it in place by stamping the smaller outer hole into the larger detent?
I'd assume corporate doesn't want the consumer to re-barrel the rifle.
Yessir. Rem260, I am now the owner of a Mossberg ATR. How about that? It took a clearance price of $147 new in the box to get me to bite, but I did. I am going to put a Boyds Laminated stock on it. I should have a pretty decent rifle for $270. I bet she'll shoot.
Looks like the barrel nut was staked to the barrel once headspace was established.

A turd by any name is still a turd.

Mossbergs are known for their accuracy, they rival Tikkas.

and BSA'17 gets it wrong yet again...

Based on what, the barrel nut?

LOL... Someone hasn't kept up with their yearly eye checks.
Probably been too busy coming up with false opinionated opinions.

OK, they are accurate turds. I never seen one at the range or in the field. The Raptor lineage is a turn-off for me and there are lots of inexpensive bolt action CF rifles that I would select ahead of a Mossberg ATR, but spend your money where you want to and I will do the same.
260, that was 100% tongue-in-cheek!
I have trouble seeing nuance in the printed word.

They are normally pleasantly accurate rifles.
Note: it took some serious GoogleFu to identify that thing; I just knew BSA was WRONG!
$147 is fairly reasonable.

They are also a Mossberg product, the company that put the "Home" in "Homely".

Are you still sore over losing that bet even after I let you off the hook?
Hardly. A steak dinner is pocket $$. I just think that all things Mossberg are crap.
Generally ugly crap as well. You would think that as long as they've been around, one time at least they would have managed to find someone with an eye for what looks good. If you're going to build crap, at least make it attractive crap.
Cheap, but reliable, crap sells in volume and all those little margins add up.
I thought that the 800 Mannlicher and 800 Deluxe were good looking rifles, but the plastic trigger housing is poorly designed and potentially dangerous. Like somebody posted, Mossberg's best center-fire rifles were the 1500s that were rebadged Howas.
If it shoots reasonably well I am going to treat it to a Boyds stock. That should handle some of the ugly. I just mounted a VX2 a few minutes ago. It feels great.
