Good? Bad? Specifically considering the 243 and 7-08 Lightnings. Tnx
Short throat? Long throat? Short box? Long Box? Kiss? No Kiss?
My carbine was MOA or better. Well built rifles. Throats on most rifles OEM are longish.

Don't think accuracy will disappoint for a hunting rifle.
Thanks 65BR. Suppose I could be more specific in what I am asking. Knowing next to nothing about Howa, Weatherbys and such, does the Howa magazine length generally allow for loading long? Specifically the short action 1500 Lightnings. My Gogglefu not working so good...
I was able to get close to the lands with my Howa .243 and a hinged floorplate.

I tried the TTSX, TSX, 100 grain Hornady flatbase spirepoint, and 100 grain Sierra Pro-hunter. That rifle liked the TTSX best, well after the Hornady bullet, but it has been discontinued....

All of the Cup-N-Cores were no problem seating at .010" off the lands and the TTSX/TSX were seated .050" from the lands, and I had some room in the magbox.

That rifle became a .308, and right now the floorplate mag is gone in favor of a DBM. I am able to seat the bullets I use now at just .010" from the lands but if I go to a sleeker bullet, the floorplate setup will have to go back on if I want to stay close. Even then, they may have to jump because the internal magbox is only .080" longer.

Floorplate mag allows a .243 (or .308) to go 2.890", maybe some change, but the DBM is 2.810". There's obviously more latitude for a .243, more so than a with the .308 cartridge.

But, so far, everything has fit, but I haven't tried any real slick bullets, either.

OK, I looked in my notes.

Floorplate magbox allowed 2.890, TXS at .050" off lands were 2.665", TTSX OAL was 2.667" same distance from the lands, Hornady Spirepoint OAL 2.682" at .012" from the lands, and the Sierra was at 2.650 at .010" from the lands. Plenty for the .243 and the bullets I used, but 2.890 isn't alot of room for a .308...
I know I had tried the 95 Nosler BT and Partition, but in a different rifle, so I have no Nosler/Howa happiness stories.

I do know my Remington 700 ADL likes them, deer don't....at all....
Op. Knew what you were asking. Did not have specs. Suffice to say I don't believe the 708 will touch lands when seated and run thru the magazine.

That said - I don't recall any other rifle in that Chambering allowing it either.

You have to ask yourself, do I want a hunting rifle with solid accuracy, or am I shooting for groups.

1st round cold bore POI consistency is often 95% what will determine the outcome on a big game hunt if the shooter does their part. Muck that up and odds are your banging away at a running animal.

I Never put a group on an animal. One shot one kill wink
All good stuff. Got what I was looking for. It's much appreciated. I have an extra scope I need a rifle for. grin
