Hi fellas. I got a good deal on a stainless t3 in 300 short mag and I'd like to hear what powder you suggest with the 150ttsx. Don't see a need for a different bullet in this lightweight package as it will do everything I need for the game I would use a 300 for at the ranges I will hunt with it.

Thanks

I have a cloverleaf load worked up for my 300 WSM Montana.

I will get back to you tomorrow.

Ramshot Hunter is worth a try

I have access to imr 4350, imr 4451, h4350 and rl17. Looking for speed in lower temperatures for hunting season. Don't rally care how these loads shoot in the summer. 3300fps+ would be nice down to say 10F.

I'd consider 168s.
They open up at slower velocity as in long ways out if you have to reach out.

Great minds think alike. The 168/175 where going to be what I wanted to use but alas the tikkas have an 11 twist barrel which, according to the Berger stability calculator make them marginality stable at my elevation and 10F and the reduction in BC as a result, make them not a good choice. The 150 shoots flatter, with less drift and hits faster and harder out to 500 with the .42 BC than does the 168 with a reduced BC of .442.

the 168s TTSX have better BC. .47 vs .42
at 500 and beyond the 168s will hit harder.
barnes web site says 11 twist is ok..

Did you look at the Berger stability calculator? The BC isn't .47 in an 11 twist. That's the problem.

No I have not. Just Barnes web site as its a Barnes bullet.
You can always try a load and see how she shoots.
I'm going to go on a limb here and your tikka will do just fine with anything you feed it

Not knowing that the 165/168 barnes tsx wouldn't stabilize I loaded My T3 Tikka with 180 TSX and constantly shot inch and 3/8 groups at 200yds. Loaded it at book max. H4350. Took a nice moose at 250 yards. Then it shot 180 TTSX, same load, same results. No moose - yet. frown

YMMV

I tried the above mentioned powders and some others. Shot several hundred rounds and most powders worked well. All went bang.

Hodgdon 4350 gave me the highest and most consistent velocity.I also shot my best groups with it. It shoots cleaner than many others. I traded the Tikka 300WSM for a Kimber Montana 300WSM and went through the same routine. I like working up loads. With the Kimber I got the same results.

I shot Barnes 130, 150, 165, 168, 180. I shot various Noslers, 180 Hornady, 180 A Frame, 150,180 Sierra Game King. Probably some others. My notes indicate my best groups with the T3 came from 150 TSX, 150, 180 Nosler BT, and Sierra 180 Game King. In that order

I would suggest Hodgdon 4350 and load those 150 TTSX.

Enjoy!

YMMV

My Winchester EW really likes Reloader 19 with 168's and lower weights. It is similar in burn rate to the H4350, but I get a bit more velocity and better accuracy.

Thanks fellas

Quick update. A friend gave me two boxes of 150gr etips, the new ones with the driving band cut, so I will give those a try.
Imr 4350 worked best for me...
W760 pins the 150 TTSX in my Montana

Superformance and the 150 ttsx are amazing in my custom 300 wsm. It has shot multiple groups in the .2's and my best group ever that was only slightly bigger than a single bullet hole. Also the speed is off the charts. I took mine safely over 3400 fps with a book load and a 24" barrel.

I also shot diagonally through a moose at 547 yards with that combo. The 150 is all the bullet you need in a mono.

I highly recommend superformane and I'm one of those guys who has mostly gone away from ball powders and I usually go with an extreme powder.

A friend asked me for my from scratch elk rifle recommendation - it was your rifle with any good scope. His other hunting partner gets around 3100 FPS with a 180 grain Accubond in his WSM model 70. Can't tell on the accuracy of the load but the rifle is not the limiting factor there.

Not that software isn't handy for rough calculations but I've found rifles to be stubbornly individual in their bullet preferences. My 7mm RM shoots any 150 great, 140's and 160's just don't work in that rifle. Nothing like giving different loads a try to prove what works best.
