If you are not too recoil sensetive then I would think the 35 whelen won't be that bad for you. Yeah it won't be something you take to the range to plink with, but I am guessing since you are getting a NULA the rifle will be meant to be carried more than shot.
If thats the case it should be managable in a 35 whelen. I have done trips to the range working up loads in my 4 pound 14 oz 338-06 with 210s @ 2800+, 225s @2700+, and 250s @ 2500 shooting 50 rounds over the course of the trip to the range, with breaks inbetween of course to let the pencil barrel cool.
My shoulder certainly feels it the next day but its not unmanageable IMO. I wouldn't port or brake it right out of the gate just cause. Now that I have my loads figured out I likely will just be shooting 10-20 rounds with it when I take it to the range just to verify zero and drop out to 500 yards. Don't shy away from the lightweight whelen.
