I am considering one of these for a handy little Mtn rifle but I am getting conflicting information on the rifle specs, some sorces say it has a 20" barrel and others say it has a 22" barrel, I called Remington and asked (for what that is worth) ad the rep I talked to said that his specs list it with a 20" barrel......Has anyone handled or bought a new Mod Seven stainless that knows for sure?......I bet they have a 22" barrel like the older models did...Thanks Hb
Buds has it listed 20 inch just checked
They Are 20"
Have you handled or seen one in person?......Hb
I haven't I have yet to see one in a store have you seen one over in your area?
Nope, I was hoping Mahoneys might get one but none do far........Hb
Yes, I Bought One Back In Dec, When They Made a Run Of The 300WSM And 260's. They Was a NIB One Listed Over On Outdoor Trader For $500. The New One's Are $672. Bud's Did Have a Few In..
20" on a 300 WSM?! Can you say "muzzle blast"?
You will go deaf the first time you fire it w/o ear protection. Short barrel, light 300wsm will just kick the crap out of you and offer you nearly no benefit over an '06. My guess is you will shoot it half a dozen times and then be looking to sell it. A mag rifle needs atleast a 24" barrel in my opinion.
You old nags need to do some actual research before you go spouting off at the Vaj....

How about a 17" barreled .300 WSM... 208s at 2750.... 180s at 2800... and 155s at 3100...

All you need to do is add a muffler...

............Yep! Some of the 'ol nags probably cannot (or do not want to) handle a compact 300 WSM.

Nice compact Dogshooter. I really like it! Have u tried a little RL17? If not, give it a go.

With the RL17 ONLY, 3200+ (155 VLD),,,3000+ (168 VLD),,,2900+ (180 Hornady),,,2800+ (190 VLD),,,2700+ (210 VLD).....300 WSM Ruger Frontier compact.....Have not tried the Superformance powder yet. Do I even need too?

As always, anytime a powerful round such as a 300 WSM is mated with a shorter barreled more compact rifle as inquired about by any OP, the detractors as usual come out of the woodwork.

"Well, you might as well buy a 30-06 with a 24" barrel."
"Well, you'll shoot the damn thing a few times and then sell it."
"Well, you'll go deeeeeeef."
"Well, it will recoil the crap out of ya."
"Well, way too much muzzle blast."
"Well, with shorter barrels you are gonna lose """lots""" of ballistic performance."

On and on and on and on....

First off!....The main theme or concept behind using a compact rifle in the field in the first place is to reduce the OAL. An easier carrying, better handling and a faster to the shoulder rifle can have its advantages given various situations.

Secondly! What one cannot handle where recoil and muzzle blast are concerned, may be perfectly fine and tolerable for another. Some of us out there have higher tolerance levels to such things.

Thirdly! If or when any detractor is willing to put up his money to buy any OP the rifle of his choice (or theirs?), then he should be more inclined to listen to the detractors advice. I'm sure the OP will be using HIS $ should he choose to buy a 300 WSM Model 7.

To the OP......If you really want a powerful and more compact rifle, the 300 WSM cartridge for that application is excellent. It is an outstanding shorter barreled cartridge. From the 20" tubed M7 you are considering, it will have more power than either a 24" tubed or even a 26" tubed 30-06 for that matter.

Lots of good quality ear protection on the market as well as recoil reduction methods, such as a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad that I use on my Frontier.

Aftermarket methods that usually escape the thoughts of the anti powerful cartridge/short barrel crowd.

Well, you'll end up faking your own death.

Nope Canastass....That was done for me.....But I came back.....BOOO.
Yeah, i always wear good hearing protection at the shooting range, as far as recoil goes im not in the least concerned......how much could a .300 WSM really recoil?.... I have owned several .300 WSM rifles in lighter weight sporters including a Sako Finnlight and Browning X-Bolt stainless stalker and found them to be most pleasant to shoot but I have never been recoil sensitive, I have always prefered lightweight bolt action rifles chambered in Magnum cartridges, with My hunting style (long steep hikes in remote country) I appreciate a lightweight handy rifles.....one of My favorite hunting rigs is My Tikka T3 Superlite .300 Win, I find it laughable that some shooters have such low tolerances for recoil, its something I never understood........(unless a shooter has some kind of ailment).........Hb
I get the concept of compact rifles.

I like the WSM in the Montana and the M70. I think the Montana is still the best overall package for the money. You can bob the barrel to your liking.

I have a couple, but I'm not a big Remy fan...if you are let us know how it turns out.
The Montana is light and handy for sure but I'm Not a big Kimber fan, I tried 2, both were .308 Win's ....one shot great and the other (a Montana) was the least accurate factory rifle i have ever owned and on top of that it had feeding issues....no more Kimber roulette for me......A Winchester 70 EW might tempt me if not for the clubby stock....plus its not really what i consider to be a lightweight rifle .........Hb
