what one would you pick i am going to get one in cz 550 magnum
Had one in a .416 Rigby. Got rid of it,big mistake.
How much do you hate yourself and want to punish yourself?
Otherwise get the Rigby, cause its cooler....
The CZ magnum action is really just the right size for the Rigby cartridge. It is a little large for cartridges like the .458 Lott.
I had both while preparing for a cape buffalo hunt in Africa last year.
The 458 Lott was an AHR version of the CZ 550 Magnum.
The 416 Rigby was a Dakota 76.
I am not a fan of muzzle brakes, and the Rigby proved to be much more "fun" to shoot than the Lott. I peddled the Lott and took the Rigby on Safari. It did a fine job on a bull at 60 yards, with the first shot putting it on the ground.
Obviously, the 416 Rigby gets my vote.

Hunter, If those are the only choices I'd go Rigby. That 25" barrel would be very unwieldy for me. I went 416 Rem for several reasons. But the Rigby sings a siren of Africa and all that goes with it. Have a great trip.
I was just wondering witch one hits harder and witch one had better ballistic thanks everyone for your help.
Jeez, man. Why wonder about ballistics? Look them up.
375 H&H will get'er done, too.
and i own a 460 wby but want one of these to
I just want one who knows maybe for pissed off groundhogs or deer i no not needed just want to add one to my collection.
For the animals that a .416 and .458 are used on,comparing ballistics of the two a waste of time.
A .460 works quite well on bunny rabbits.

THAT just may be the definition of overkill!

Used it on a bigger rabbit too.
.460 for jacks, .416 for cottontails...no sense using too much gun
Yup.
WANT is more fun than need. I use my 416 and 375 for deer with reduced loads and it's a hoot. Fun to shoot and quite deadly.
What uses? I have not hunted with either but have been charged by Elephant twice. The Lott would reduce the pucker factor more. Both times they backed off with no shooting needed.
The Rigby is such a classic and ideal for Buffalo and large plains game. The Lott if you thought you would be shooting Elephant on a regular basis.
The Rigby is better for mixed use on other game. The Lott can be very versatile with loads for rabbits on up. Lots of pistol bullets available for plinking and practice. But unless you shoot like Elmer Kieth the range is more limited on the Lott. Not as much for the Rigby it is close to the 375 for versatility.
The Lott is way too much gun for most people or uses and they end up as safe queens or re-sale frequently. But if you shot enough heavy game I think the Lott would come out ahead in the KO department.
If on an unlimited budget I would get a 416 either AHR or probably a Dakota.
What I ended up with is a .375 model 70. Had a 458 but after the novelty wore off it was traded off. Thought about converting to the Lott but all I had to do was shoot some full power loads off the bench and the urge for the Lott would go away.
If you want one or the other just for plinking there are a couple things to consider I think. Are you going to hand load or use factory cartridges. They are really too different types of cartridges with factory Rigby being much more expensive and the Lott being capable of shooting the Lott Short--the 458 Win catridges--if that matters.
I've had a 9.5 lb Lott and my instinct (without checking) would be that it might be easier to down load it even to handgun bullets. With pedal-to-the-floor loads it's fairly brutal and my tolerance threshold decreased pretty steadily after a half a box or so. I also had a 416 Rem Mag for awhile which generally matches the Rigby ballistics in a smaller case but was much easier for me to shoot more frequently than the Lott.
Both are "African cartridges" though the Rigby has a more romantic history.
The guys in Enid OK have a Rigby ready to roll sweet wood too
I handload you guys got me thinking the rigby is the way to go

The Rigby is cooler, has tons of tradition and Harry Selby stories associated with it.
As a practical matter, I'd go with the Lott. Ammo is cheaper, bullet selection is better and you can go with widely available 458 Mag ammo in a pinch or just to run downloads.
well guys they are very hard to get here in P.A.so i might be looking for something else.
Find one on line. You can buy it and have it shipped to your gunshop, who will do a "transfer" putting it in your name. Ask them, they know the scoop. I am only interested in unusual or high-end rifles, and the only way to find them is on the web, notably on Guns International. The savings in sales tax will offset any transfer fees your dealer charges.

What Biebs said. I personally think the .416 is a more useful* caliber but as a big, fun toy this is a LOT of rifle for an awfully good price. (nice scope already included)
https://www.gunsamerica.com/918194154/CZ-550-Safari-Magnum-458-Lott-w-Leupold-VXIII.htm*The .375, though completely vetted for what it "can" do, has by more than a few people been seen as a bit of neither fish nor fowl. More powerful than necessary for most things and a bit light for when you are getting serious with the big and dangerous fare. A .416 ballistically sits astride not being all THAT much more than a .375 for plains game and such while still enough gun to be considered a true "stopper", albeit at the low end of that description. I would be remiss to not mention that, of course, a .375 you can handle is superior to any cartridge you can't.
I have a Rigby and a 375. I don't think I'll be getting anything bigger. My 45's are 45-70 & 45-90.
Lott of people wish they had Rigbys. Sadly, supply does not meet demand and humanity suffers.
Some of us reached the mountain top and watch the sun rise with majesty. Others struggle in the darkest valleys below.
