I've been shooting Lake City brass in my Ruger American 223. Thinking of building a 223AI on a Montana 84M, starting to accumulate stuff. Have seen a couple of reports indicating that maybe 223 Lapua brass isn't as good as some of their other offerings. Anybody have any commenta about the Lapua 223 brass? Is it worth it?

Thanks,

David

Canazes: I would definitely give the LaPua brass a try.
A few years ago I bought a Remington XR-100 semi-target/Varmint Rifle.
Its an all stock factory Rifle by the way - with only a trigger adjustment.
I mounted a Leupold 8.5x25 power variable scope on it and set out to see how it would shoot.
I started with LaPua brass and Berger 52 grain match bullets.
With this Rifle and once fired LaPua brass I shot the smallest group (5 shots at 100 yards) with a factory Rifle (non 40-X Remington) that I have ever shot.
And I have been shooting groups for more than 50 years now with literally 200+ Rifles.
That group, shot with the LaPua brass measured .121"!
The LaPua brass in 223 Remington has sure worked WELL for me!
It seems to resist fatigue well also.
Best of luck if you decide to try some LaPua brass.

I built a .223AI Montana last year and have used nothing but Rem brass and have zero complaints. One of the nice things about the .223AI is the cheap brass.

My ES/SD is way low and I have tons of FF'd brass ready to go.

VarmintGuy / Higgins

I appreciate the comments! I've been consistently getting sub 0.75" 5-shot groups w/ my RAR IN .223 using bulk cheap Lake City brass. I know you don't have to spend a lot to get great performance w/ 223. Still can't help, wondering if the Lapua brass is worth it for 223 - w/o a doubt its worth it for the larger chamberings.

I'll probably have to buy some just to try at this point regardless.

Thanks,

David

I've used LC 5.56 brass for several years. Recently bought some Lapua when Brownells had it on sale. It is much more uniform in all respects than LC.

Smallest groups I've ever shot in my life were with my 700 VTR in 223 with Lapua brass. I'm getting 1/4 MOA. It was shooting MOA with Fed brass.

The LC is very good for the price, and probably a bit harder than the Lapua. Yes, I said harder than Lapua. Words you can't often say.

Both are much harder than Winchester, which is much harder than Remington and Federal.

That said, whether the Lapua is actually more consistent/uniform is kind of a crapshoot with 223 IMO. I am big Lapua fan, and in my 243, 260, 308, Lapua is the undisputed King, but 223 isn't the crown jewel of their lineup IMO. At one time I heard reports of it not being made by Lapua. Then the newer stuff came out that was marked Match on headstamp. It supposedly is made by Lapua, and better. But not all reports have it being that much better. Mostly issues of weight variances in the same lot.

Without too much typing, in a nutshell, the best LC brass is very good. The stuff that is "in spec". But the military does not sell it, they shoot it. The stuff Federal loads is not it. And the loaded ammo with an "X" prefix certainly isn't it.

When I get around to it, I am going to compare 100 of each, LC/Lapua/Norma. I have it here waiting, but just haven't done it yet.......

Lapua brass is on sale over at Brownells with free shipping over $100 FYI

Higbean: Midway U.S.A. had LaPua 223 Remington brass in stock and for sale at $63.00 per one hundred pieces!

DeFlave: I have used Federal brass for decades now in several of my MANY Rifles in caliber 223 Remington - I have as yet to experience problem ONE with that brand of brass!
I get very good accuracy and fairly long brass life while using the Federal stuff.
What else should I be looking for?
Are you "hot-rodding" your 223 loads with that Federal brass?
I am a notorious NON-hot-rodder in my handloads so maybe that could explain our diametrically opposed views on Federal brass?
