I have a savage 99 and those three options are basically it for factory loaded ammo. The Remington and federal are very similar style bullets but the sst is more of a baslistic tip.....what's the difference ?

Boxer, I have had a couple .300's and my current one is a 700 retubed with a barrel chambered for .300 Savage.. I have shot a few handloads though it, and will shoot some more. But at its speed most bullets work well.. Just shot a big doe with a 150 gr. Silvertip.. Perfect expansion.. Remington have long been a standby in our country.. I also killed some game with a PowerPoint.. What ever shoots best will kill all the deer you will shoot..

Hornady designed an SST specifically for the .300 Savage both in ammo and as a component. I have no idea its effectiveness.

Most of my Savage 99s like the Remington 150 grain corelocts. They always expand perfectly on deer from my experience. Great, no fuss deer cartridge.

SST has been (I have heard of changes) notoriously frangible at 06 speeds & greater but I'd think it's accuracy & softness could be a real advantage pushed from a Savy.

My buddy whose .308 Win I load for has had great success w/ 165 SST.

All that having been said I'd find what your interest rifle likes and rock on.

according to Hornady, their 150 gr SST designed for the 300 Sav is softer than their standard 150gr 30 cal SST.

Haven't put one in a deer yet. But my M99 sure shoots them well!

Of the 3 bullets I would just buy a box of each and pick the one that shoots best. Not gonna be any huge performance difference....

Main difference between the Remington and federal ammo is you can still buy 180 gr loads from Federal, but it's 150 or nothing from Remington.

I have been shooting a .300 Savage of some flavor since the early 1960's and have felt for many decades a 150 grain bullet is the way to go.....

I've shot deer with the Remington bullet handloaded, and the Federal factory ammo. Both worked fine so choose on some other criteria like price or availability.

I've shot the Hornady 300 SST at paper. In some rifles it shot better than the Sierra's I usually use, and in some it didn't. No huge differences.

That's fine. Our three generations of users since the 40's came to prefer the round nose 180 gr load that remington stopped making a few years ago.

The most accurate bullet in my 300 Sav. M-99 is the 150 gr SST.
I like being able to crimp in the cannelure at the perfect length for the 99. I use the Lee Factory Crimp die.

Thats why the SST is such a great bullet, not only heads gone but gutted also.

The larger sambar is still only a young deer but was taken at just 160 yds with one shot. You can argue bullet makes and weight for ever but the shot needs to be well placed. Regarding the rem corelokt ive never used them in the 300 sav but the 130s in the 270 win have accounted for 100s of pigs and goats its a great bullet. I just think hornady nailed this bullet for the 300 sav
