I have rifle that has a black painted stock from Mcmillan and I want something different.I am trying to decide between just having it hydro dipped or should I have it painted in a camo pattern. Not sure what the pros & cons are for each. What has your experiences been.

I have sent one out to be dipped, and I'm very happy with the result. It looks great, and has been durable so far.

On the other hand, I have another black stock that is either going to be dipped, or painted. After seeing all of the tutorials on the web, I think I'm going to camo paint it myself. Looks like a fun and relatively easy project.

I assume all of those stocks are painted? Some I would swear were dipped.

Anyone else have any experience with a dipped stock as to the durability of it. Thanks

Dipped are pretty durable IMO. But any stock that gets painted or dipped can accumulate some damage after a while. Truth is, I really could not care less about it. It simply does not bother me. Anything that isn't fine wood any way.

I have painted, dipped, Cerakoted, Duracoated. You can apply a clear coat to the pain, if you wish. It definitely helps.

The new spray can Duracoat is good stuff. Easy to do also. It sprays very nicely......

I can imagine a quality industrial paint would be much tougher then a dip

Sprayed this in about 10 minutes for my buds 12 YO son. Just freehand. Hit it with matte clear coat after. Simple, yet effective. And can always be painted over. They both really liked it.....

Granddaughter had hers dipped about 5 yrs ago. It has held up well.

I have my synthetic stocked Rem 700 painted with flat olive drab Krylon and Krylon webbing spray. It creates a really unique camo pattern; so far it has been really durable since I covered it in a couple coats of clear protective spray. It's a fun project to take on either way.

My Rem 700 .308 is camo dipped in Proveil : Reaper Buck. To protect the finish I gave it two spray coats of matt clear. As for durability, it's holding up well so far.

Cool pics dingo. This is not in response to your post.

Dipping has no sole! It's like putting a condom on.

Painting is like just going for it, getting in there and getting your groove on seeing what happens and not stopping till you are satisfied! laugh

Yup I think I'll try to Commission you sometime this spring on a couple of stocks. Really nice work!
Sure like the looks of this, with the matching FDE? on the action. Looking for a scheme for the new K-hunter.
