What bolt action rifle (9.3x62) would you buy if your finances were such that greater than $1,000 is out of the question?

You would be hard pressed to do better than a CZ.

CZ 550 is a solid purchase! Very accurate wood/blued rifle! I topped mine with a Trijicon Accupoint and shot my Ontario Black Bear with it.

I look forward to doing some dark timber elk hunting with it also.

Ruger African hands down! Mine shoots bugholes with 250 grain Nosler Accubonds!

Mine is on a Mauser, but for the money I would get a CZ550 and buy a good trigger for it. I have a CZ550 custom in 458Lott and it has a Timney trigger.

CZ550, I have one. Full stock or regular your choice. Tikka is not a bad option either. The CZ is accurate, a controlled round feed and holds 5 in the magazine. Pretty much good option for anything in North America, and a legal Elephant rifle in many African countries.

I used a Ruger African in 9.3x62 for about three years. It was a very well made and very accurate rifle, but the weight, scoped, with a sling and the long barrel just didn't work very well for the kind of hunting that I do. I considered chopping the barrel to 22", but finally decided to sell it to someone that could use it and appreciate it.

If you run across a good one at a reasonable price, I would advise you to take a good look at it. I sold mine for less than $1,000, but I haven't looked lately to see what they are selling for these days.

That's a beauty mudhen. One of the reasons I got rid of mine was because I feel the 200gr. partition in my 30-06 does just as good of a job as my 9.3 did with heavies... Oops, was I supposed to say that...

Yes, I think that is the general consensus unless one is going for truly BIG game.

Bug, what are you going to hunt with it?

I probably don't need it. I have a couple 338's, a350, a 375 and a 416. But I want.

So far, prairie dogs are the only animals I've killed with anything bigger than the 338's/350. Hope to shoot a doe with the 375 this week end.

I very much want to do in a Cape Buffalo and if I can swing it($), I'll use what I can. Also, I plan on going for a water buffalo in Texas - perhaps the 9.3 would be best for that.

I have hundreds of 375 bullets. Most are being shot at little rock's on a far hill side.

I have a lot of 416 bullets too but am planning on selling or trading my rifle for another. I don't like my 416.

If I reflect too long, I probably could realize that I have gotten by with a 280 and a 223.

Yep, I thought about adding that tid bit, but I was hoping you guys knew what I meant. Of course the 9.3x62mm is often considered the minimum caliber/cartridge in Africa, even though it may not necessarily be "legal" in some territories. It is still respected greatly over there, and for good reason...

mudhen - the original Ruger "African" has a 23" barrel. Your pix matches my African exactly. I have found the 23" barrel a near perfect compromise between handy, loud yet with pretty decent muzzle velocities and weight. My question - how much practical difference can the loss of 1" make? Homesteader

Well, I was probably more than a little influenced by the fact that the other rifle that I was using for elk at the time was a Ruger No. 1-S in 9.3x74R.
