I spent way too much money on gun stuff prior to the election. Afterwards I made a vow to not buy anymore guns for a while. I actually passed on a new glock 42 for $280 and new 700 adl synthetic with scope packages in 223 and 22-250 for $275.

I thought I was doing ok until last night. A local shop had a 700 mountain stainless laminate 7-08 with talley lightweights and a leupold VX-II 2-7 for $519. It was all in very good shape but the rifle had the j lock. In the end I folded, the temptation was too much.

My coming to work at a gun shop was like hiring an alcoholic as a bartender!

Since I've been here, my buying habits have changed dramatically. You can't imagine the stuff I walk away from daily.

So I'm kinda like that alcoholic bartender above, but I've almost quit drinking.

Don't worry you are fine - if I walked into a shop and found a Mtn LSS 7MM-08 for $519 I'd take it in a heartbeat!! Thats the beginnings of a "faux Ti" build!!

Darrick I was the same for quite some time in a nice gun store..it took about 7 years to figure out I couldn't buy them all......

I already have a faux ti 7-08 but it has never been bedded so I'm going to pop this one in the ti stock and see which one runs better. My old one has a matte action and stainless barrel so this one will look better. If it shoots decent I'll part the old one out.

$519 for that rifle, scope, and mounts was a great price, no sane person would have passed it up, even it is a 7mm08! ;-)

I couldn't imagine working in a gun store. The shop I bought this mtn rifle from only paid the guy $400 for it. I've watched them get guns from people for so little money I'd have a hard time not taking them all home. If both parties are ok with it and know what they're doing I guess it's ok.

There is one shop I rarely visit anymore after watching them really take advantage of an old widow. Took several guns off of her for a fraction of market value. One was a minty Python they gave her $250 for. That was the most she got out of any of them.

The shop I got the mtn rifle from often has some good deals. They paid $400 for it and put it out at $519 which I thought was a reasonable mark up and know I still got a great deal no matter what they paid. The other shop put that Python out at $2800.

We all make those kinds of promises. I said I wasn't going to buy anymore guns from November through December. I bought 4 (so far). It's called tempting fate. I hate failing. But have some nice guns.

Guns are a good investment,you can always sell them and get some of your money back and sometimes even make a little money.I have way too many myself.

I, too, am trying to quit, but it ain't easy. I bought 2 this month after swearing off.

My problem is that I have more guns than hunts left in me.

It amazes me that people go to the casino, buy lottery tickets, buy drugs, go to watch Hollywood movies, pay to play golf and spend all kinds of money on booze without a whim.....and worry about buying a gun.

There were would be a lot more innocently killed people alive today, and less families destroyed, if those culprits decided that their bar or drug fund was really a gun fund.

As a Mauser guy I'm familiar with steps...could you tell me what sub-model 98 has 12 steps in the barrel??? I've never seen one.

I had the same issue when I worked at an indoor range in Louisville for 3 years. I got stuff 'at cost' as part of the pay package, during a time when I was a very active IPSC shooter. I ran the competition program there, and used my privileges to buy a LOT of powder, primers, and other stuff, and even got some good gunsmithing done so I could show it off to the customers.

It was just a bad thing to do to an pistol addict. I guess it was a good thing that arthritis got hold of me and made me switch over to prairie dog rifles. I haven't got over that one yet.......

I feel your pain. I ALMOST passed on a Browning A Bolt Stalker in .30-06. for $199.99. Can't decide if I want to flip it or make it a donor action.

Pretty easy, really.

Step #1.. Go hunting on hunts that require expensive gear, out of state tags etc.
Step #2.. Buy a boat.

If you still have money and your wife hasn't taken 50% of what you have in a divorce leaving you sleeping in your boat because of steps 1&2, there is no hope.

I've been trying to cut back but really is easier said than done (Don't know why). As I say that I find myself thinking I need to pick up a couple of the closeout Tikkas!





I just got mine out last night and started looking through my reloading notes. Gonna take it out and try and shoot a few yotes with it. Tried selling that thing for a year and kinda glad I didn't!!

Step one!!! Start hunting with a handgun.

Amen and Amen. Have to love it when people are paying someone else to destroy them in body/mind/soul and then turn around and tell you how much money you are "wasting" on a gun.

As far as working in a gun store, it was usually a severe temptation. However, there were some days that were so full of issues with stock, personnel or customers that any more guns were the LAST thing I wanted to think about. Some nights I wouldn't even flip through a catalog during a televised baseball game.
