The thread on on the 700 CDL-SF in 300 Roy got me to thinking, what styles of discontinued Remington rifles do I miss.

I'm with you on the LSS Mtn rifle, except for the stock it was nice nice one.

I just wish that they offered the wood stock ADL like they had years ago, good bluing, slick action and quality walnut

Stainless left hand rifles, I liked the look of the LSS but don't mind the fiberglass stocks. No RUM's though. Come to think of it a LH CDL-SF would be very nice too.

I miss the old BDL varmit rifles in short actions..... BDL in 223 or 243 or 308

Remington offered the .300 Wby in the Classic line back in the mid-80's IIRC.

700 MTN Guide is one I'd wish to have to chance to purchase again.

A friend of mine has one of those and has killed a pile of moose with it over the years. It has been a great gun that has seen a lot of rough use.


I'm going to add the left hand BDL in both short and long actions to the list of stuff I like.

660 - the one they got it right with, easy to carry, 20" barrel and IMO handled like a dream.

i like carbine length rifles so i miss the 600. they tried to get in on the guide gun fad a while back with the 673 but it felt like a lead filled 2x4 to me. if they would have sawed that ribbed barrel down to 18" and stuck it in a synthetic stock in 308, 35, etc, i'd have owned one. in general i miss any gun in a 35 rem. love the 35 rem.

Bracing for the hate wave here but I miss the 798's, especially when they ended up on the sale rack because people didn't know what to make of them. Fun rifles that introduced lots of folks into the Mauser world.



There are never enough well built carbines or 35 Rems out there.

Can you miss a rifle if you have one? My first thought was to list the Model 30 in any of it's variations and the Model 14 1/2 in 44/40. To me two great rifles, but I have them. I would like to try on a Model 720 in 30/06.

VLS with the checkering and black grip/forearm tips, checkered as well. Had 1 of these in 243 and kick myself in the ass every day for trading it on a Winchester HV in 243.

I preferred the 600 stock over the 660 but would have preferred the 18.5" barrel with the 660 sights...and all calibers in the Magnum laminated stock in stainless with a black matte coating like the Custom Shop puts on the KS rifles.

The 700 LVSF is one I never bought...would love to have a .22-250 1/8 twist in that configuration...

511/512/513 series .22's with the beehive bolt. I used to see a lot of 513T's on the rifle range when I was a little kid but never realized what they were until I got older. I'd love a 513S even if the bolt is on the wrong side for me.




I'd like to say I miss the Nylon 66 and while it was a ton of fun for a 14 year old, in reality the 10/22 has much more going for it over the old 66.

Ditto on the Model 141. The 760 may have been an improvement with the detachable mag and admittedly much stronger front bolt lockup, but they made it bigger and more ungainly. For a quick handling firearm with a good punch an 18" 141 carbine in .35 Remington would be (was) the cat's meow.

Same/same with a Model 121 Fieldmaster .22.

Maybe I'm just bemoaning missing out on the rifles the older guys used when I was a kid but when you pick up one a 121 or 141 or 51x you realize why the older guys today, like me, bitch about the lack of "quality" in modern rifles. Although I'm sure those older guys that I knew as a kid were probably bitching about the cheaper rifles Remington put out then...

I'd like a 30 in a custom 416 Rigby about as much as any rifle.

I miss the 725--wish to hell I'd bought one back when I was young(er), but I already had a Model 70 and just couldn't afford to own two centerfire rifles.

I've got one in 243. One of the most accurate rifles I own. I had a chance to buy both a 17 Rem and a 221 Fireball in the LVSF, and didn't do it. Believe me, I've kicked myself over that several times. I do wish Remington still made the 600/660 models. The first 243 I ever saw was a Model 600.

A close friend of mine picked up a lightly used 7 XCR for a nice price. It sat on the used rack in the gun shop because it was/is a 243. The shop owner said it wouldn't have stayed five minutes if it was a 308. The guys who passed on it really missed out.

A few years back they had the gloss grey/black LSS in 30-06 and I am still kicking myself for not getting one. And then for a short while they offered a blue LSS I think in 25-06 and I am a sucker for color... did not buy one of those either...

I don't own a Remington rifle these days, but have owned a few over the years. However, I wish they would bring back the Classic and produce a different caliber every year in a harder to find caliber. My 1st Roberts was a Classic that they made one year. Wish I still had it. Couldn't wait each year to see which caliber they would produce that year.

Was going to say M7, KS FS or AWR but I just checked and it looks like they are making something similar.

Not so many really, their 22 line up isn't near what it was 50 years ago. A modern hepburn singe shot sort of like the classic series with a new chambering ever year would be nifty. They could reintroduce the parker sxs too.

..I wonder what calibers it is available in...and price? $2600 like the 7KS was?

260Remguy: I have missed the longest their Remington 700 Varmint Specials in 222 Remington.
But the line of Remingtons I miss the most are their amazing XR-100 Rifles in all the original calibers it was offered in.
I actually fear Big Green going our of business in the near future.
They keep making mistakes and poor decisions let alone how amazingly over-priced their centerfire bolt action Rifles have become and they will soon be defunct.
And that would be a shame.

Had a 673 350RM, warne model-7 bases, LEU qrw rings, LEU 1.5-5 #4 scope, three cases of ammo, dies and components. That was when I was managing kill permits avg about 30 whitetail per year. Took about a dozen deer with it over a few years, and tried very hard to dislike that rifle. It was not particularly great at anything. Ended up getting rid of it in favor for a stainless Ruger version built off their short mag rec. The Ruger had a bigger mag box for loading old school 250 grain loads.

After the 673 was gone, I missed it. Though it was not particularly spectacular at anything, it was pretty good at most everything, it was rather unique, and kinda looked neat. Shot well from field positions, and always killed stuff. The guy that got it, kept it set up the same, and still kills stuff with it every year. Has a lot of character now.

I've thought this for a while now.

only remingtons i still own are 2 great shooters,788 lefthand in 6mm and the other is not a rifle. original 221fb xp-100. the rest of my rifles are all savages or tikka's.

rem141r - +1 on M600 love. Mine's in .308Win...refinished the stock so it didn't feel like I was carrying a 2X4. Worked great as my jeep rifle. Homesteader

I didn't like the vent rib on either the Remington 600 or the 673. Since I use scopes, I don't want superfluous open sights if not having them is an option and I don't ever want a vent rib and an oversize sharkfin front sight.

KS and first gen ti. If they had ever put a KS profile on a ti, I'd miss that most!

It doesn't sound to me like you have much experience with 'older' 700s.

I wish I had a record of HOW MANY 700s that I've had + friends had. WE never had a single solitary problem and we NEVER doubted the accuracy NOR had any trouble getting it.

243, 6mm R probably THE MOST accurate rifle I've ever owned. I almost could not put together a load that shot over 1" ( truth)!- 270, 7 RM several,
30-06, 300 WM, 8mm RM ( still have it) and a friend HAS 375 HH.

Out of that list only the 8 and 375 were ONE each, the others were multiple. I STILL have some OLDER 700s, they're staying here.

My first gun was a Remington Model 511 22 rifle. I have no idea how many rounds I've fired through it, but it's still as accurate today as it was when I got it 54 years ago. I've had a bunch of Remington's since, and still have a bunch today. I have had 2 Remington firearms that I didn't care for, an 1100 20 guage shotgun, and a 700 in 223. I doubt very seriously that Remington is "going anywhere", as they are still turning out the most popular centerfire sporting rifle ever made.

I take it that you're not a Remington fan.

Remingtons were/are great rifles when put in McM stocks.


They are missing the boat mightily when it comes to what's new, but there are some great deals floating around on used. Zero desire to pay for new.

Loved the Titanium, hated the BC stocks. In an Edge, about as good as it gets.

M7 Saums, XCR/XCR2, SS ADL/BDL, and SS MR all put in your favorite McSwirly or Edge stocks are great, functional hunting rifles.

I miss my old Rem M580 "Boy Scout" .22 my dad bought me in 1973. Put umpteen thousands of rounds through that thing. Great memories!\
I miss my early 2000 era M700 LSS in 300RUM. Only thing about that one I didn't like was that blasted lock on the action.

I see on the Remington website they are making a limited run of wood stock 700ADL rifles.

He'll be along shortly to tell you about all the extraction issues, accidental discharges and bolt handles falling off he's had.

ive got one of them 700 classics in .250 salvage. its is way too much metal and wood for that little cartridge. however .... it is balanced perfectly, great fit and finish, and it shoots teeny groups. also like the purple hue that the bolt develops.

Agreed, the current prices for new Remington 700s are so high, in most cases, that they aren't competitive with many other manufacturers, particularly if you're going to swap stocks. The 700 SPS for under $400 at Wal-Mart is probably the best Remington deal if you're looking for a donor action or barreled action.

Many of my Remington 7, 600, 660, 700, and 722 rifles are bedding in McM stocks, mostly in the McM Hunter style if they have 24" barrels or the MR style if they have barrel less than 24" long. Plus, I still have a smattering of Remington bolt guns bedded McM's BDL, Classic, Compact, Rem Hunter, and Seven styles.

Something else Remington deserves credit for is as far as I know the vast majority of their guns are made in the U.S.A. unlike *cough* Browning and Winchester.

Bring back the 660 and XR-100 and chamber it in 6.5 Creedmore. You will sell them in big numbers.

TI original was also a great rifle. They should make them and put them in greyboe stocks.

I love my 512, 513, 514s but I have moved over to the CZs even if they have not the smoothest solution for magazines. CZs put the squirrels to sleep.

They are coming back with the 40X rimfire. I like that idea.

I wouldn't mind seeing a come-back of the Classic series but instead of limiting them to just 700 actions, make a 'classic 788 in 243 or 308 or 6mm (hey, there's the first 3 years of new 'Classics'!)Then a 3 year series of 600/660's.

Briefly had a 725 in .280 that I shouldn't have let go. Sellers remorse kind of like the Classic or early BDL w/o the whiteline spacers as I recollect.
Had a 700 Mtn in .280 that was dreadfully inaccurate by comparison, yet I fiddled with everything in a mistaken attempt to get similar accuracy out of it.
Loved the style, just didn't miss the 2.5" groups

Model 7 Custom shop guns, don't know why, just like them.

I miss Remington quality.

A new 700 BDL came with a loose front sight. An attempt to snug it down met with a snapped off screw stuck in the barrel. Disappointing....

I miss all the 6mm Remingtons, the few 257 Roberts, and a scarce 6.5x55

The dopes running Remington are not gun people, and know little of Marketing...all accountants. Their business plan is really horible to say the least. Remington could have captured all market share and kept it, but they have no insight as to their customer needs and wants. Absolutely none of the new companies could have got the market share they have without the complacency of Remington.

I would buy a couple more 700 Ti's if they were still made, the champ of light rifles.
And I would quickly grab a Mod. 30 or two if they were still made.
My Mod. 30 bought by Dad in the 1960s was built as a 35 Whelen back then by John Buhmiller and still used by us.
That is a long time for a dependable rifle.... I think.

Stop charging a thousand dollars for a standard barreled action in a Bell and Carlson stock.

I handled the new ADL anniversary edition at Grice Gun Shop. It aint no ADL throw back. More of an insult I still look for good used ones to pick up.

Me too. Always had a soft spot for the old ADLs. These have a Taiwan feel to them. They need to be nicely blued,gloss walnut,nearly vertical grip and do justice to a true bread and butter rifle. Cheap knock-off.

Was the question what rifles do you miss, or what rifles do you miss with?
Because I can miss with any rifle equally.

I've only had a couple or so 700 ADLs - pre '86 - BUT 1 was in 30-06. It was nearly EQUAL in accuracy to a BDL 6mm Rem.
Those were 2 of the MOST accurate rifles I've ever owned.

The BDL 6mm's 'slightly' better accuracy MAY have been from lack of recoil.

I've read that the ADL advantage was more rigid stock NOT having the cut out for the floor plate. I dunno, but that was an amazingly accurate rifle.

It was also fairly light weight.

My findings as well Jerry. I had a BDL varmint special in 6mm. Shot a pile of whistle pigs with it. I had a pair of 6mms Remingtons at the time. The BDL and a No 1B Ruger. The 22/250 is my sweetheart for varmint hunting,but the 6mm Remmy is no slouch.

The Academy in my area has a few of the limited run 700ADL rifles on clearance for $499. Wood stock has checkering like the early 60s 700ADLs but its pressed. Not as eye catching as the older ADLs, but better looking than the SPS and ADL synthetics.

I will miss owning one of only 691 40XB, .22LR Sporter Repeaters ever built. Just sold it. But, I will enjoy the $8000 I got for it

I got rid of my last Remington some time ago, and don't miss any of them. I prefer Ruger 77s and several European brands to Remingtons.

Then the model 600, pictures of them remind me of a picture of a late 60's muscle car, all raw performance and ignoring refinement, but simplistically elemental in their function.

I really miss the old model 700 BDL SS models with the smooth bead blast finish but I damn sure dont miss the J-Lock....ha!......Hb

n8dawg6, was the 700ADL 257R in synthetic or wood? If I remember correctly they made a limited run of 700ADL synthetic in 222, 257 and 6MM.

I have one of those Grice 700 ADL matte/sythetic 257 Roberts. Bought it back in 2005, still on the shelf, NIB. Grice had some made up in 260 for that same run of 700 ADL matte/synthetics.
