Anyone have a range/field report using this bullet? I'm looking for a good long(ish) range bullet for my 30-06. Target is whitetail deer out to 500 yds. I'm also looking at Berger VLD and I can find way more reports on the VLD than this newer one from Hornady. Rifle is a Ruger MKII Leupold VX3 with a M1 knob FWIW.
Until recently 200gr was all I could find in .308 caliber. I loaded some in my 300 WSM with very good accuracy. I've not shot any at game.
This winter I had planned on experimenting with them in my 308 and 30-06 but the local gun shop now has some 178gr in stock. I may well buy those for 308 and 30-06 and save the heavier bullets for the WSM.
While no personal experience, I've read some reports. It seems that they may not hold together well from magnum's at close range. But at 30-06 speeds, or at longer ranges from magnums I've read some positive reports.
What I found was the Hornady Precision Hunter factory loading, 178gr. All the reports I've read in other calibers rave on the accuracy, not too many reports on game though.
Scenars are reputed to be quite robust. 155 grains should scoot nicely from an -06 case as well.
That 178 Precision Hunter loaded ammo looks tempting. Wish I could get some here.
