Ya, a google search produced a long range shooting range on Long Island...which I imagine was named after a person.

Dennis DeMille, GM at Creedmoor sports played around with it for some matches and then went to Hornady about it.

It was named after the company.

And how did Creedmoor matches get it's name? And when you find that out, find out where those that came up with that name got their name.

If the guy that worked on the 6.5 had been the GM at Arby's it likely would have been called the 6.5 Arby, but he was GM at Creedmoor sports.

Just a few months later at the 2007 SHOT, Dave handed Dennis a round (unloaded) with a cartridge prototype of what would come to be called the 6.5 Creedmoor. Dave thought it should be called the 6.5 DeMille, but Dennis asked that it be named after the company he ran--Creedmoor

"After a protracted search for a suitable piece of land at a reasonable price, the
NRA was able to purchase a plot owned by the Central and North Side Railroad of
Long Island. Seeing that the Association's plans were likely to stimulate rail travel,
the railroad company had agreed to sell the seventy acre plot at low cost. This
farmland had formerly been owned by the Creed family.

The gentleman credited with naming the new range was Colonel Henry SHAW, a member
of the range committee of the NRA. On arriving at Creed's Farm and observing the open,
desolate field, with coarse scanty grass and brambles he declared it a veritable moor,
Creed's Moor. Hence by a happy inspiration and coincidence "Creedmoor" became the name
of the new range. )

Much effort went in to the search for a suitable site for the new range in the vicinity
of New York to no avail. Finally the search turned to the plains of Long Island. Here the
NRA bought a 70 acre site, at one time owned by a farmer named Creed. Colonel Henry G. SHAW,
a member of the NRA range committee, is credited with coining the word "Creed-moor" having
observed the similarities of the site with the moorland of Great Britain."

At least they didn't call it 6.5 What Cheer, another old time range in RI. There were several old cartridges called "What Cheer".

Remington always cataloged their 260s as having 1-9" ROT barrels.

The Co's name in AL came from the Creedmoor Range on Long Island, NY, pure and simple. The homage goes there, albeit circuitously via Nebraska and Alabama.

Personally, I like the name 6.5 Arby's. Naming it after a sandwich filled with plastic meat and surrounded by hype (but which still tastes pretty good) seems fitting.

They shoulda named it the 6.5 Sideboob.
