i dont even know what barrel length constitutes a “carbine,” but who on here prefers hunting and shooting with a 20” or shorter spout?
thats what she said. no wait, its the girth not the length. what? never mind
Most of mine are 20". The ones that aren't should be.
I like carrying the short ones, but shooting the long ones.
I own 4 rifles with 20 inch barrels, and they spend much more time afield than the others.

20" is about as short as I like.
This one started as an ADL 243 that sold very cheaply. I had the bbl removed and replaced with a $25 (shipping included) 20" 308Win M600 bbl I found. Action was trued up, glass bedded, bbl free floated with new crown. The forestock was shortened by 1.25" for better proportion to the shorter bbl. It handles very well and the old VariX-II 1-4 is perfect for the carbine project.
My sole carbine in bolt action is a CZ-527 in 7.62X39. Barrel is 18.5". Very handy, easy to shoot, and accurate. Bought it from a 'Fire member last spring and he ain't getting it back!
I have the following in 20":
223
243
308
358 win
458 win mag
500 A-Square
Really I could do 98% of all my hunting with a 20" 223 and 308.
That's one sweet ride SuperCub.
I have a CZ 527 Carbine in 223 that I really like. 9 twist 18" barrel....2.5-8 VX3.....6.8# all up.
It's my big game rifle. I stepped up from 222 last year.

yup.

I love it SuperCub! This is about as close to perfect as it gets for me. Perfect for the Deep South thickets too.
I've got 1 now that's 20" (Model 7 308) and my 223 700 is getting lopped off at 21" next week. 20-21" is perf ft for me. Tried the 18.5" carbine in a 7600 and just didn't care for the way it balanced (or the blast).

Not the best pic but only one I have since I changed the stock
For many years after I started hunting deer, I wouldn't even have considered a carbine. Of course practicality dictated only one deer rifle (ahhhh simplicity). About 17-18 years ago got my first carbine and was impressed with the difference a couple inches or so made in the handiness of a rifle for woods hunting. As it turns out my farthest deer kill, about 200+ yds, was with a 18" rem 7600 in a farm field with 180 gr round nose bullets......about the last combo most would pick for such work, but worked it did. Since then I've also come to prefer shorter barrels for certain bird guns used in the thick stuff.
Ruger Ultralite target grey 7/08 in walnut
The rifle that gets carried the most is a 20" 7mm-08. I've had guns with 16-19" barrels and a little to short. 20-22" is perfect for still hunting in the woods or sitting in a tree or blind for a couple of hours
I often use rifles in 375 Ruger and 416 Ruger with 20" barrels. I also have a couple of 45-70 lever guns and a 375 H&H with 20" barrels.
In the timber and alder areas I like the 20" and 22" barrels.
I have only owned one carbine length centrefire rifle.
1949 Brno model 21 in 7x57 with a 20.5" barrel.
Hell yeah, 20” is too long, I prefer them in the 17-19” range

That is actually a handy little rifle for carry.
I like it.
I use two, both pre-war Mannlicher/Schoenauers. One a 1903 in 6.5 X 54 and a 1908 in 8 X 56. Love them both but neither are the only rifles I hunt with.
Pre-war model 70 Carbines, although I believe their initial label was short rifle: 22 Hornet, 30-06, 270 WCF...
Ruger Ultralite target grey 7/08 in walnut
Boy, Target Grey and pretty walnut are awesome. Want a TG RSI in 6.5 Creed/.260/Swede for approaching dotage.
I love it SuperCub! This is about as close to perfect as it gets for me. Perfect for the Deep South thickets too.
The very early 700 ADLs had very similar variation. I bought one in 30-06 early this year and promised to a young fellow I work with before it arrived so that's were it went. I liked it so much I had this clone done instead of looking for another original.
I own two carbines. One is a Remington 600 Mohawk in 308 and the other is a Remington “jamomatic” 742 in 30-06. Actually when I feed the 742 with mid handloads of IMR4064 it functions well.
Neither is very accurate but I keep them because they both go back a long ways and have meaning to me.
I don’t hunt with either gun.

I'd bet with some tweeking, that 600 could be made to shoot. Cool little rifles.
I learnt that Reminton 742 et al need to have chambers cleaned to ensure great operation long after I sold a 742 Carbine '06 for beer money in college 30 years ago.
That thing shot sub MOA but ripped rims off cases! Dude that bought knew problem and has killed more than 60 deer with it. Won't sell it back either!
I got the 600 from my brother after he had a stroke and his hunting and shooting days were over.
You are correct that I’ll bet I could make it shoot well. Mmmmm...... Maybe time to give that a go. Thanks
Ruger Ultralite target grey 7/08 in walnut
That is a beautiful rifle. Looks like it shoots nice too, as that Muley discovered!
I bought this Savage 99A in 250-3000 with a 20 inch barrel new in the early 70's. It's been a great blacktail carbine.
I own several-
Weatherby S2 Vanguard "youth" carbine in .243 Win. Most accurate rifle I own. Under 1/2 MOA at 100 yd.
Rem M600 mohawk .308
TC Venture "youth" carbine in .308
Ruger American stainless "youth" carbine in .308
Winchester M670 carbine in .30-06
Winchester M94AE in .30-30
Great for hunting out of treestands
Better pic from today from a little walk about... shows the Deep South pine thickets too.
I think I might have one or two.
250 Savage 18.5" Ruger 77 RSI
Remington 700 6x45mm with a 20" tube, weighs 6.75 pounds ready to roll
Remington 700 with 19.5" barrel, 35 Whelen
Winchester 94 7-30 Waters
I like 20” and less, but if it doesn’t make sense with bore, case capacity, performance, muzzle blast, etc. then I had rather have a bit more barrel...but that’s less and less these days with powders.
16" .358 and 18" .375. Both bear rifles for crawling thru the manzanita thickets.
16" button mag 30/30
Ruger Ultralite target grey 7/08 in walnut
I LOVE that rifle.

Sweet rifle! Where in MS?

250 Savage 18.5" Ruger 77 RSI
I am a sucker for stainless/walnut Rugers. How does that one shoot?

A buddy of mine and I used to do an annual trek up to Noxubee each year. We always had a good time.
Ok I guess. I only put enough rounds through it on paper to get it dead on at 50 yards.
Paul I actually live close to Noxubee, about 10 miles
Paul I actually live close to Noxubee, about 10 miles
Noxubee is a nice refuge. We always got a meat deer when we went. Every now and then someone killed a trophy. That someone never was me. Dragging a deer out of some of those hollows can be a workout huh?
I currently have 4 carbines
Marlin 336 .30-30
1949 Winchester 94 .30 WCF
1979 Winchester 94 XTR .30-30
Rossi model 92 .357 mag.
I've killed more deer with the Marlin 336 and 1949 Winchester 94 than with any other rifles I own.
Up until last Saturday I had a 7600 carbine. Great handling rifle but I came to the realization that I didn't need a 30-06 for what I do. Sold it to a young man who turned around and killed an 8 pointer with it Tuesday. Good for him.
I have 2 Marlin 336s in 35 Remington.
Here is a nice Sako carbine in 222 Mag. It is hard on rabbits...
Does an M1 Carbine count?
I have the one my father got from the DCM back in the 1960's for $19.95. Also have a couple of 20 inch barreled 700's.
My Mossberg 464 in 30-30 features a 16.25 inch barrel. Its a true featherweight.
Sherwood
Colt Lightning SRC in 44-40. They can be hard on rabbits too...

My Alabama friend carries that rifle in 222 rem in his truck for occasional pot shot at a coyote.
I got a Ruger GSR, worked great hunting hogs out of a blind.
i say under 20". i hunt exclusively with carbines. heres the list me and my boys use.
marlin 336 sdt
marlin 336d

rem141r - noticed that you've listed a Rem M600 under your handle. I've one in .308W / 18 inch barrel that'll really 'light up your world' when you squeeze the trigger.
It'll do a job on your ears too. But over the years its been a right handy jeep rifle. Now days I use a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 7.62 X 39mm instead...akin to a bolt .30/30W

If you want to list them all, I don't think I'd remember them all and I don't want to dig them out. For the brush I hunt I don't want a 26" barreled anything other than as a novelty, say a Savage 1899 or some such. They hold well, but not for me as a regular carry rifle.
I have become partial to a few rifles with 16.5 to 18.5" barrels. These include a Ruger American in 300 Blackout, a Marilin1895 in 45-70 and a Ruger Scout Rifle 18.5" barrel in 308 Win. I do like shorter rifles, but there are times when a longer barrel is good for the extra velocity. I have a couple of TC ProHunters wtih 26" barrels. They are almost exactly the same length as my 18.5" barrel rifles. Gives me a handy rifle with significantly more velocity. I do not mind a 24 or 26 inch barrel on the right rifle. They have their uses.
Though I have a few carbines this one gets carried the most, Rem 600 in 308 with original Redfield scout scope. It's makes a great still hunting rig.

My Grandpa used to say this regarding our friend's pug: "It's so ugly it's cute."
Every time I see a 600 I think of it.
Kinda partial to carbines myself:
Marlin 336SC .30-30
1908 Mannlicher-Schoenauer
CZ-527 7.62x39
Steyr-Mannlicher Luxus 7x57
A carbine, to me, has a 20" barrel or less. Anymore I don't want a barrel less than 20", and really prefer 22."
Once upon a time I felt differently, and mostly all I owned were carbines.
Top to bottom,
Savage 99 EG in 308 Win - 24"
Ruger 77 RS 358 Win - 19"
Ruger 77 RSI 7x57 - 18.5"
Ruger 77 RSI 250 Savage - 18.5"
Ruger 77/22 22lr - 20"

Oh my.
I've got three.
Marlin 336RC in .30-30, my favorite deer rifle.
Marlin 336SC in .35 Remington, made in 1951 and almost flawless.
Ruger UL stainless, in .30-06, with boatpaddle stock. This is an amazingly versatile rifle and gets hunted a lot.
In my life If it’s a rifle over 40” Long it almost never leaves the safe and usually when it does it’s for pictures to post it for sale. I’d rather carry a 39.5” 8 pounder than a 45” 6.5 pounder. The rifles I always use are a 700 adl with a stainless model 7 223 barrel with 1/9”
A model 7 pacnor257 Roberts ina cdl stock at 7lb3 oz scopes and loaded and a model 7 7mm08 in a Mickey ks with 20” shilen. Weighs 6lb 8 or 12 oz depending on scope. 20” barrels on all. 39.5-40” overall length.
Lots of nice rifles mentioned here
The lil CZ527 in x39 Has lots of uses
Hank
Three that will be seeing use starting next Saturday. Top is an Argentine sporter with a cut down military stock and a 20" Israeli 308 surplus bbl. It weighs 7lb-10oz. Below is a M600 Remington with a very much slimmed down M660 stock....also a 308, that weighs 7lb-8oz. Both are tack drivers!
Next is a Howa Mini 1500 in 6.5 Grendel.

Ha! My son is doing all his hunting this year with a TC Contender Youth Carbine that has a 'Fire bought threaded 16.5-in. .300 Blackout bbl from MGM on it. It is stupid wieldy!
Love this thread and the carbine rifles. Earlier, I said I had one rifle with a 20" barrel or that was considered a carbine. Well, I guess I meant bolt rifle carbine! Here's a couple more...
Handirifle in 45-70, duracoated metal and stock with 4x33 Leupold and Bubba buddy cartridge holder
MS primitive weapon and even though it has a 22" barrel, it's shorter than my 30-30
Marlin 336 30-30 with 1-4x20 Leupold VX-2, my sons first rifle. Killed quiet a few deer with it...
Even though not a rifle, my favorite shotgun and probably my cheapest too. Stoeger Coac Gun 20 gauge. Killed piles of squirrels, snakes and other vermin. Even killed a few doves and crows...
Fireball, those were some wonderful rifles and took a lot of game.
I also had a 77 RLS (18.5") 30-06, 77 RSI 308, and 77 RL (20") 257 Roberts.
I always wished Ruger had used a 20 or 21" barrel on the RSI's... if they did I'd still own one.

i pack around a similar one, but usually in .41mag...16" MGM, 1.5-5x...
i do like those 1.75-6 short tubes also...
also hunt quite a bit with a 16" barrels in .35rem & 45/70, and 20" barrels in 45/70, .414supermag, and .445supermag:
Also pretty fond of Model 7-KS's, and have them in .250/3000, .35rem, .358win, .350mag, and 300saum...
turdy-five rem:
.350:
I have several rifles with barrels from 20" down to 16.1". Love them.
i dont even know what barrel length constitutes a “carbine,” but who on here prefers hunting and shooting with a 20” or shorter spout?
..............Imo, a 20" barrel is a little long to be considered a true carbine type rifle.
I have a 300 WSM Ruger Frontier. Sometimes I use a scout scope, and sometimes I use a scope in the conventional position over the receiver.
''Twas out smashing rocks and such today with my little CZ 7.62 Carbine-that rifle is a hoot!😎
