Down to my lowly 270 and 243 with a 223 for schits and giggles..
I turned in my looney card so I won't embarrass the fine 24 HR members here. Also got vaccinated against Creedfever, though I have a spare 6x42 and Talleys sitting in the box. I think I'll hang them on the tree as ghosts of Christmas past....
A lot of us need do the same. I have a Matched pair of old Browning Safari rifles (small ring Mauser) in 308 and 243. Long ago I decided these two would do anything that I am likely to do, but one 223 would make a nice kicker. I have three to choose from.
That way I could sell about twenty center fire rifles and simplify my life. Why not? Well, it seems guns are a bit soft right now. Wait until the next socialist is elected.
I could probably get down to my .308 Adirondack and a .22LR but I can't figure out which of my other guns to get rid of... they are all good shooters, better lookers, or have good stories. And I've been good at inventing "roles" for them all to play...

Congratulations!!! I am still downsizing to a sensible battery too. I will have to turn in my loony card as well. I am down to my 204, 221, 223, and a 6.5 Creedmoor. I have embraced the fact that I am a varmint hunter. I caught the Creedfever... but I don't regret it.
That's a perfect battery for here in MT... but I've given up on the idea of perfection as it relates to anything rifle. Were I to pare down it would still be a pair of 308's and a 22lr.
Just as well ditch the 243 while you're at it. 223 covers the light bullet loads, as well as 75-80s for decent long range fun. The 270 loaded down or with 6.8 bullets covers the heavy 243 end, with 145 eld-xs, 170 Bergers, or swaged down 162 amaxs to cover the really long range stuff, plus good old 130-150 grain hunting bullets for general use..
I too made the purge several years ago. Giving away rifles to my children or selling rifles to purchase one to fit their needs. I'm down with to a custom 7mm RM, custom 7mm-08 and a .223. Very happy and the children are too.
I'm down to bare minimum with a .300 Holland, a.300 Winchester, 2x 30-06s,a .308, .300 Savage, .260, 2506, .243, .222, 17 Rem, 17 hmr and a dozen or so .22RFs...

Particularly between the .243, the 25-06, and the .260...
Since I'm now laying rifles in the corners of the house because the safe is full. I should probably do the same. I have sensible rifles that make sense for the most part and don't really want to get rid of them though.
I could dump the .35 Rem 760 since I have a .35 Whelen 7600. And maybe the M70 Extreme Weather that I've never carried, but that one makes the most sense to keep! My Mauser is my favorite and not going any where. I'd probably keep that over all the others.
270 belonged to my late uncle and is a '69 PF M70 that's had 9 different stocks on it over the years and lost count of scopes. Currently sitting in take off Tupperware, DD's shimmed with a kerosene can lid and one rear base using 8-40's because I stripped out a 6-48 using the base to "shape" the shim. Tapped it and ran. Scope is little brothers circa 1989 VXII 3x9 (is there any other scope??) it's a peach and put a NPT and 2 Fusions in the same hole a few weeks ago.
243 is a RAR that I stole from a guy that was bought from another guy that was hard up. Paid $250 then sold the scope he had on it for $100. Talleys and a 6x42. Shoots the fancy blue box 100's MOA.
Tikka is a standard "buy at the shop kinda rifle", kisses 75 Amax until I run out, and has a SWFA 10MQ sitting in my modified Talleys.
They are custom hard use rifles, with perfect ergos. The M70 required two fingers to pull the trigger until I found a 1/4" wrench.
I'll prune down my firearms when my wife pares down her shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just gotta have one for every occasion and new occasions just keep poppin up.
I cut back some two years ago, when I wasn’t looking some more snuck back in. I caught the Creedmoor bug, it’s a fun cartridge to shoot. Plenty good pig killer. My granddaughter captured my first one, a Vanguard S2. Seems I’m always loading shells for her.
Hanco. You have a mess of rifles. I thought you were of the same mindset that I was. Now is the time to buy not sell.(especially blued finely walnut stocked underappreciated sporters from noobs)

I like rifles, when I quail hunted I had a couple dozen shotguns. Down to a couple of them. I have a half dozen pistols. There is just something about a rifle that I like. I can’t help myself. Is there a rifle junkie clinic?

My problem is I like shooting. If I was down to a pair of centerfires I'd wear the barrels out in no time--then I would spend more money on a custom barrel than the cost of a nice used rifle, and have to wait for my curmudgeon, independent minded gunsmith to get around to putting a new barrel on..............
Besides, I sold a large portion of my rifles, now I've bought more. No vaccination or immune system can protect me--the looney virus does indeed mutate..........
I'm down to my 6.5 swedemoor, 223 8 twist Tikka and a 22lr
For me it all came down to priorities. I used the money to purchase more camping supplies and now instead of working over my next rifle I'm working my way over the next ridge. 😁

Congrats on a most sensible move!....I wish I could also get down to the rifles I really need, I have been struggling with this for years but when I sell a few off I end up buying a few more back again....Lol......Hb
Liquidating at the bottom of the market is nuts. Prices are severely depressed and a Democrat controlled White house, Senate and House is 3 years away. Buy every [bleep] gun you can get your hands on and sell when the panic starts again. AR's for $400.00! Dow's at $25,000 and ready to blow, so probably safest place to put money.

I was planning to liquidate after deer season last year. Then that dang Trump fella won the election and the market went soft. Now I have as much or more stuff than before the election and no intention of selling during a down market. Don't really care for AR's. But, now that AR's are down to $400, may pick up a couple more "just because"...

For a good many years, all I had in the way of centerfire rifles that I actually hunted with was a 270, a 243, and a 223. I had a collection of Mausers, and a heirloom or two, but those cartridges covered all I needed to do in the hunting field.
Much as I like it, I prefer SA's... I have MT's in 308, 7mm-08, and 257 Rob (which will get the Pacnor treatment to Creedmoor). The 7mm-08 makes the 270 redundant.
Unless you are in a good 12 step program you will relapse. Loonyness is biological and cannot be given up easily. You might just take up drinking instead.
From a practical standpoint, I could easily do the same, however as some have said, I just like them and enjoy airing them out once in a while even if they don't get used much. Several of them are of interest to my sons too, so I hate to dump them for a temporary financial bonus when they'd be hard and expensive to replace later. There are a couple in flux that could go with few regrets, but most of what I have are well-liked.
Another issue is that I've accumulated enough components for most of them to be able to shoot pretty much forever for "free". Gotta burn that stuff up as neither of my sons is into reloading at present.
I should have started by purchasing two Tikka T3 in 308Win, threaded for suppressor, put them in McMillan Sako Hunter EDGE stocks and a pair of fixed scopes.
Would have saved me thousands of dollars over the years...
I have got my son and wife taken care of with quality rifles and have downsized myself to 3 for me. (Doesn't include 22's or Shotguns)
Son - Semi Custom 6.5 Creedmoor on a 700 action with a 3-9x40 Conquest Wife - T3x Superlite 270 in a McMillan with a 3-9x40 VX2 Me - Savage Heavy Barrel 223 with Weaver 6.5-20x40 LAW 280 AI, w/ 4-12x50 Swaro Weatherby Vanguard 375 H&H w/ 2-7x33 VX-R
As far as Big Game Hunting goes, I really would be just fine with just the 280 AI.
Almost 2 years ago now, someone (s) did the purging for me...
Was making a move from Northern NYS to Socal (why god..?). I stopped for the night in Az only to awake and find that my 6x10 enclosed moviing trailer with ALL my stuff in it had been stolen right off the hitch of my truck.
That was a tough purging.! But, I am having fun getting "re-upped" in the firearms department..
I've given away several rifles to two daughters, two sons, a grandson and two sons of a friend. Several of the remainder [the ones or a number in brackets] are spoken for and will leave soon. I suppose you could say I am getting there.
That's no fun. I guess that a purge means you can DO A LOT OF OTHER STUFF.
Fixed it....
Purging might not be for everyone. I do love to shoot/hunt but prefer the KISS way of life. KISSing the handloading goodbye was pretty "freeing" and it just kept going from there.....
Been purgin' wares from their parcels, all afternoon and am slowly gainin' on 'er.
Will salm the Vudoo together, load a hunnert 243AI Alpha form 105's for a Faux Ti,load a coupla hunnert 162's for a SNEAKY Lever Gun and bolt a few more Krunchentickers together. Tomorrow I'll shoot a few Lots of ammo through the Vudoo, christen the winner and flog on the bitch without mercy. New cam pin shipped from Franklin for the Electric Whizzum and though that swapaloo won't affect POA/POI,it'll gimme another reason to shoot.
Am spoolin' new line on a coupla reels, will upend a few more and tie up some Fresh Riggin' to boot,as I've a couple new Lots of Maruto hooks to R&D,once the water starts rushin'.
Lookin' like I'll be purgin' a few Reupolds outta the saddle tonight too.........................(grin)
Oopsie...only "fair" to add more pics, for Whining Clueless Kchunts, who've gotta Google it all. Congratulations?!?
It be a Skookum Parcel +P and I'm hopin' the Bart' Specter contour will shoot an inch or so at the 25yd line. Laughing!
Mags are money,in multiple AICS DBM footprint magwells I stuffed 'en in and I prolly have a "few" to extrapolate. Hint. Just saying. Laughing!
Geometry is money and Mike obviously did his homework, from stem to stern. Chamber dimensions are snuggerish and'll Smooch everythjing fed and I've a "hunch",that I've a wee bit of ammo to extrapolate.(grin)
I've got quite a fhuqking few Shilen 2-ouncers and this one is a PEACH.
Anywhoo...now The "Lucky" Kchunts can say they've "seen" one.

Just a guess, but I don't think anyone cares... they're probably waiting anxiously over at "as gay as it gets".....

Jack,
The rifle market is going to be down for many years. The down market is as much Trumps election along with an aging population whom have driven the gun market since the 80's.....All good things come to an end.

Just wait till the 6mm CM train gets moving... it will replace all three above 😁
I've heard the saying that "less is more". I disagree "more is more". Why are you guys getting rid of your guns. You don't see golfers saying they could get by with a driver and a putter. Many other situations in between that warrant a 5 or 7 iron. Unless you have a financial need to purge, I would keep your irons. You will regret it long term. I have sold guns over the years that I wish I could have back. Sure, I can replace them, but now at a higher cost and it's not the original that made me love them.
Tiger Woods would never go out on the course with a such a limited bag of clubs. Unless your wife is going to bash your teeth out with your extra guns, keep em.
Yeah, This year I counted up that I had hunted with a centerfire rifle 18 days of the possible 22 day's it was legal for me to hunt deer with a gun in the States I hunt, so I find it hard to justify keeping a half dozen or more deer rifles in My safe....I am thinking I will keep 2 quality deer rigs and 1 beater for bad weather days, I can easily hunt three weeks a year with 3 rifles and I wont have so much money tied up in "Safe Queens"........Hb

16, just how old are you ? I ain't that old yet !
Yes, I can get by with fewer rifles but why ? I like em and hunt em.
I don't need creed vaccination I've read so much, I get NAUSEATED at the idea. It ain't happenin here.
I have thought about a purge many, many times but always question where the money would go? Really it’s better than most “investments” (if you buy them “right”), I shoot them or they do go, and I like the memories with many of them....so I think they’ll stay and I’ll just keep accumulating . Of course many are much stronger than myself when it comes to addiction - and certainly “to each their own”!!

He's probably secretly cranking out thousands of 6.5 Creedmoor rounds on a powered, professional production Dillon.
No more handloading, fewer guns, yet I plan to hunt and shoot quite a bit next year.
Crazy world!
I walked into a bar one time and ordered a 7 up! A man sitting on the bench looked at me and said: What the hell is wrong with you man ordering 7 up?!?!
I said: Has it ever occurred to you I might be the only one in here that doesn't have something wrong with me?

This has been a great thread and you make a lot of good points. Sad to see the thread crashing crew showed up to disrupt your thread. Seems pretty disrespectful to me. I will show my respect for you by not responding to the childish rhetoric.

I have recently cut down a bit and went quality over quantity. However, I have rifles such as the one below that are just not worth selling/trading because I don't think I would get my perceived value of it on the open market.
A 1979 production BDL "Varmint Special" heavy BBL 308 Win. My wife's uncle bought it new for silhouette shooting, had it bedded and floated and the trigger worked on. Most accurate rifle I own by a lot. I worked up a load (178 A MAX, 44 grains Varget) and took it to 600m. Consistently under .6 MOA all the way out.
It's a nice rifle from some of Remington's best years and it shoots very well. On the market it's probably not worth more than any other BDL so even though I have no use for it (I would be better served with a smaller varmint cartridge) I don't think I will let it go because I think it's worth more than it's worth, if that makes any sense.

Your rifle is way cool!
The Varmint Specials I’ve been around were all spectacular shooting rifles.
I sold a few about a year ago. I regret doing but it was time. I hope I have a bunch of years left but I certainly don't want to be on my death bed with a safe full of rifles. For me 3 isn't enough but I understand. Congrats on letting go!
I had a purge of my own after my heart attack. I currently have 2 centerfires and two rimfires. No shotguns because that was part of the purge. I have to pick up a sub gauge this year. There's rifles on my radar but I don't know if I'll act on them. I will be looking for an H&R Handi Rifle 45-70 because JES is going to rebore it to.50-70 Gov't for me because I want a cheap BPCR.
