It seems like Magna Port was quite common in the 1970’s but you don’t hear much about them? Are people getting their rifles Magna Ported today? Was it not effective in reducing recoil or did the screw on muzzle break kill the Magna Port process? They still have a web site. Does anyone have a Magna Port rifle and what are your thoughts?

I have a few Contender barrels with magna ports......I don't think they reduce recoil, but they do reduce muzzle jump.

Have a Ruger #1 in .458 Win Mag that's Mag-na-ported. Came that way and it works! Little noisy at the bench for the fella setting next to ya though!

In the field it's not too loud without muffs and does reduce felt recoil by about 15%, they claim, and that appears true enough when compared to my former CZ550 in .458 Win Mag.

Look at the Magna-Port website. The porting reduces recoil by about 15% while the brake reduces recoil up to 45%. They make/do both.

My .338WM is. Comparison with identical non ported reduced PERCEIVED recoil slightly (15% sounds right), muzzle jump by estimated 75%. Only way to tell for sure is with a ransom rest, which was unavailable.

Remember, perceived recoil involves multiple factors, including muzzle jump, noise, etc. With an added cheek piece and a Decelerator pad, the Ruger tang is pleasant to shoot. I have/had '06's and a 7mm Mag that were less so. I don't shoot it from the side, so I haven't noticed any unpleasantness due to increased noise level, with or without hearing protection.

The larger the caliber, the more effective the porting is it has been postulated. No experience with a ported pistol.

I magna ported a pre 64 Model 70 in 300 Weatherby (formerly 300 H&H, I didn't do it). I have been completely satisfied with it. I agree with the posters about the amount of recoil reduction occurred. However, what I like most is the reduction in muzzle jump and twist. Seems to send recoil more straight back. I would do it again given the choice. I refuse to be around anyone shooting a muzzle brake.

I have a Ruger SBH in 44 Mag that I had Mag-na-ported. Muzzle jump was significantly reduced and there was some reduction in felt recoil. IMO - It's really hard to say recoil was reduced by XX%. It's how much more comfortable it made the gun to shoot and in this case it was a lot.



I just had a 300 WSM Ported as well but haven't shot it yet. One of the things I like about it vs a Brake is there is no increase in barrel length.

I bought a Kleinguenther 7remington mag. That had a magna port. Had a couple of more at the time and could not see any difference.

I had a 700, that had been magma ported in 7 mag also. I had another identical without. I couldn’t tell any difference either. Don’t waste your money. Removable break would be better.

I think you'd have to shoot the gun before and after the porting to really tell. That being said, some Rem 700's can kick like a SOB.

I have decided to set up with a suppressor instead of the porting or any kind of brake. I have only a small amount of hearing left. I feel like I must save it. Be Well. Rusty

My first rifle ever was Remington 700 in 308 Winchester. Upon initial firing I was sure it was chambered in 50 BMG.

Changed the stock & then it felt like a 308.

I shot a .378 Weatherby the owner had MagnaPorted. It wasn't too bad, it felt like an 870 slug gun to me, more of a push than a hard kick.

Built a .375 Ruger and shot it before and after magna porting. Very noticeable difference in felt recoil and muzzle lift.

Not sure about rifles, but I have a Ruger 480 and a guy that works for me has a S&W 500. The 500 is ported and the 480 is not. I shot them both side by side. The 480 first, then the 500, then back to the 480. The 500 has a much bigger round, but I think the 480 has more recoil. I think the porting helps the 500.

I shoot a lot of sporting clays, trap and skeet. I've got 2 shotguns that are ported, a Browning Citori and a Benelli Montefeltro, both 12ga. I want to think it helps control the gun, but I can't prove it.

I'm not sure if I'd waste the money to port a barrel on a rifle. I'm not sure if it reduces recoil enough to warrant that kind of expenditure. Plus, you're typically not making multiple shots back to back where it might help with gun control.

Like StoneCutter, I shoot some sporting clays and a lot of trap and skeet. The 2 shotguns that I use are a Browning Citori O/U that is Pro-ported (by Mag-na-port) and a Browning BT-99 that is angle ported. Both are also 12 ga. The Citori has virtually no muzzle jump which allows for a second shot just as fast as I can pull the trigger.

I've shot ported 460 and 500 S&W pistols that are ported (not Mag-na-port) and the porting definitely reduces the recoil and muzzle jump.

I've used the 2 port and 4 port on hard kicking handcannons, and the 4 port on a 35 whelen and a 358 win rifle. I wouldn't go through the hassle again. I don't notice ,much recoil reduction and they are ;louder. But the look is badass...

1982, I had an ultra light 30-06 built rifle built on a, then new, fiberglass stock. With a 4x M8 Leupold, it weighed 6 lb 7 oz. After a year of getting belted by 180's at 2750 fps (I was young anew to recoil) I had it Magna ported. It worked.

In my case, we had two identical stock-factory RU77's in .338WM on hand, one ported, one not (mine). There was a significant difference. Definately effective, but as to a "waste of money" that is a personal judgement call.

I went ahead and had mine ported. And later did some other stuff. Never regretted any of it.

Mag-na-port also sells and installs their Mag-na-brake, a regular muzzle brake that screws on. I had one of the varmint brakes installed with 220 degree chambers for prone shooting, mostly so the exhaust wouldn't blast stuff off my portable bench. It went on a single shot Cooper Phoenix rifle with a heavy varmint barrel chambered in 6.5-284 Norma, that would knock my hat off with the scope if I was concentrating too hard on vaporizing a sage rat and relaxed while squeezing the trigger. Substantially reduced the recoil. Because my neck was operated on to remove a spinal cord tumor, all my centerfire rifles in 6mm and above are equipped with muzzle brakes. In having a new prefit barrels made I have them equipped with Vais, Pac-Nor (my most common choice of barrel), or other brands of breaks at manufacture, all produce the same results.

The issue of hearing loss is important, I require digital hearing aids as part of a Worker's Compensation award, but regardless of brake or no break, always shoot with ear plugs under muffs without exception, at the range or in the field, period. If the ears ring, and/or a headache ensues after shooting, that's noise exposure and recoil thrust producing a hearing loss and concussion. It's not just your rifle or pistol, but all those around you.

I wish I could put one on my 338 Fed Kimber Montana but the barrel is too thin.

Something else to consider. Get a suppressor for your rifle. Besides making it "hearing safe", it does an awesome job of taming recoil. It's a win win. My wife loves to shoot my 338 Edge with the Thunder Beast 338 Ultra suppressor, running a 300 gr @ 2915 fps with NO hearing protection. She smacks steel at a mile with it.
