Just picked this one up . I don't buy many latley but could'nt pass this one up and thought I show it off. It's an H&R Ultra Wildcat in 222 Rem. 23 1/2 " tube , Sako L461 action, hinged floor plate in like new condition . I really dont think it's been fired. I don't know much about these so I was hoping someone might know more. It's the second proprietary Sako based rifle I own the first being a Marlin 422 Varmit King in 222 also built on a L46 action.

That's a nice one. Usually very accurate. I've got four L461's. Two .222's, a .222 Mag, and a 17-222 Something-or-other wildcat that I can't find a match for. These came after the L46 which was clip fed. I think there is some sort of importer history with Sako, I always hear pre-Garcia but really don't know what the significance is. The H&Rs had Marlin barrels I think, and came in a couple of unusual calibers. I don't think that action has the integral tapered Sako scope bases does it?
Here's a pic of the 2 . The H&R has a round top and is drilled and top for use with Weaver style bases, The Marlin is a L46 action with Sako integeral bases and is clip fed.

Bottom pic is the Marlin 422 Varmit King sporting a Leupold 6X .Rare bird only just over 300 made.

Great looking rifle!
Sweet!

I love the deuce!
Love my Sako 222! Mine has a Bofors barrel making it a 60’s era gun if I’m not mistaken.

She loves Nosler 50 grain varmint ballistic tips and a warmish load of H322
The Marlin has a stainless barrel
I came across one of these in .30-06 years ago, and grabbed it out of curiosity. Shot quite well, so I dropped it in a McMillan and left it alone.
Yes the larger caliber ultra rifle were very nice. They were based FN actions if I recall.

I bought an action only in 1970 Sako L-461...….sweet is the right word for it......but I prefer the .223
223 does have the ballistic edge the 222
Damn nice rifle, I’ve never owned a 222
My uncle had an Ultra Wildcat in .222 Rem back in the 90s. IIRC, it was built on the same action as the Sako Vixen (I could be mistaken) and the bore looked like a Marlin with Micro-groove. It was a long time ago, so I could be mis-remembering...but it was another of many rifles he swapped away, much to my dismay. I think someone around Blackfoot has it now, or he may have kept it until he moved to Twin Falls.

I'd like to know who has it now. It shot *lights out!*
I hope to get the H&R out for some range time at sometime soon. I will post the results
What are the scope base options for these Sako short action round top actions?
Always loved those older Sako's and variants. I still want a 6 PPC hunting weight....just for grins.
Lucky, LUCKY you. What a little beauty!
I know this post is old but I ran into one of these at Bass Pro today. It a super slick rifle and very tempting. Its a Sako 461 action but has Harrington and Richards on the barrel and butt pad. Caliber is 222 Remington. I don't know where BPS gets their used rifles but this one is a looker for sure and in a (IMO) great caliber. They are asking $1495 for it which to me sounds a little on the upper end. I'm pretty familiar with Sako rifles but don't know a lot about the Sako/H&R's. Can any of you enlighten me?
Beautiful rifle.

I have an UltraWildcat (317) in 223 and love it. Killed one buck with it with a Nosler 64grBSB. The Sako Collector Forum has some info on them and a few members that collect that specific rifle. Mine also has a round top receiver, they were also made on 461 actions with the Sako dovetail. I have a buddy who has 2 of them, one in each action style. They handle beautifully. PM me with ant specific questions. I’m not an expert but will help if I can. There is quite a bit of history with them including some unique 317’s that were put together and sold as “auction rifles” when the original H&R shot down. Some unique configurations with those rifles.

The 461’s are special in my book. I have a Bofors Vixen that I rebarreled with a Hart 6x45 barrel from 222Mag, a pristine Bofors 223 that’s pretty rare and the UltraWildcat. Would love a few more.

Nice snag.

Scope base options are Redfield and Weaver to the best of my knowledge.
I haven't bought it.....yet. I've had several Sakos, I have a Vixen now with a Wilson barrel in 223. The one at BPS is really nice and super clean. Just wondering if their right on the price??? $1495 and tax is what they are asking for it.
$1495 is probably on the upper end. If you like the rifle, and it’s in exceptional shape, it’s worth considering that you aren’t likely to come across another in your lifetime. A collector might sell one out of a collection, but not likely at a discount.
Those little Sakos are nice rifles and come in a few forms.

I got this Browning/Sako 222 a few weeks ago. Round top. No salt wood. Nice little rifle.
