Just returned from 10 days in up-country Maine and was just amazed at some of the stories that my wifes relatives are telling. I herd stories of 100 lb coyotes that were as big a a German Shepard, of course I know that they are all just full of it. There was however one story that made me wonder, some of the locals say that there are wolves roaming the woods in northern Maine, has any one else herd theses stories?? Has any one seen a 100# coyote as big as a German Shepard?? I know the whole time I was there I did not see any wolves or 100# coyotes.

No just hybrid coyotes shootem!

100 lbs is pushing it, but I've seen one big coyote (may have been a coy-dog cross) that would have gone 65-70 lbs easy. On the road just outside Grand Lake Stream. I tried to unlimber my pistol at him (was riding shotgun with my pard) but he faded into the timber before I could get my sights on him. I checked where he was sitting: his head was level with growth that was 20-24 ins high. Beautiful coat, too. It's easy to see why deer are getting scarce in Northern Penobscot county: the coyotes are getting fat.
Pals who are guides in that area claim to have seen wolves, but those might be coy-dogs, too.

Coy-dogs are another interesting subject, I am not sure how much is really know about them. Kinda like the "Pizzly" or grizzly/polar bear hybrid. It seems strange to me that a coyote would mate with a dog when on most occations they would just kill & eat it. I did however find one newspaper article on Maine wolves, this woman is apperently wondering around in the woods looking for them.

A few years back we got 'heaviest dog' at a contest with a 39.5 lb coyote. This was upper Midwest with about 40 coyotes represented.

I have read that NE coyotes may grow to 60-70 lbs. Most western coyotes top out at 40 lbs max. Most are 20-30 lbs. They feel heavier if you have to drag or carry them farther!

I have hunted coyotes in WV and in Ohio and have never gotten one that weighed more than 35#, I can remember draging them out (2) at a time and thinking this is much easier than draging a deer. If there is a 60# dog out there, I dont know where to find him.
