So im gonna be picking up a few guns to add to my collection when I get back and was thinking about getting a savage 12FV in 22-250 for varmint hunting mostly yotes and lynx. Anyone got any other suggestions or input for me would be greatly appriciated. I currently have a remington 700sps in .223 and a ruger 10-22 and would like my next varmin rifle to be able to compliment my current ones.

Been into Savage varmint rifles 14 yrs or so now...

The FV is no frills...26" matte blue tube & Tupperware stock

Will shoot yes...muzzle heavy yes...heavy to pack yes..

I'd stick with a 223..Savage is 9 twist outta the box..

Something lighter if you're gonna carry...

Predator Hunter..full camo film..22" med heavy tube...

Detach box mag..#18453 for the 223...#18455 for the 22/250

That rifle's more of a prairie dog rifle, think fixed position off of a bench. The heavy barrel would make it unwieldly to pack around. The savage tupperware stocks are really bad, very flimsy and will definitely need to be replaced. If you go that route then consider the model 12FCV which has the accustock, it's got an aluminum bedding block that stiffens the stock.

The 22-250 will be a good 'yote gun if you hunt long range setups. But, it will be hard on bobcats. The higher velocity will mean stitching more holes in cat hides.

Unless you're ranges are long, that .223 sounds pretty good already.

I have the 12fv, 22-250 and its nothing to carry it 3-4 miles p-dogging on the places I shoot. Accurate as all get. Perfect for coyote & related size varmints, explosive on p-dogs to 800 yards.
Pass on any "accustock" it is not worth the extra $$ no matter if it may be stiffer. Flexing (over rated) never caused me to miss in the eons I have had any of my Savages.

I like my Savage Model 11 FCNS .. its lighter and has the accustock. I don't think you need the heavy barrel for coyotes.
