I have a friend that I have hunted with for the last 25 years and he has been a very good friend over the years to me. We are headed out west in a few weeks to do a little fishing and to shoot some prairie dogs. I really do not want to go the route of having to pay an outfitter to shoot prairie dogs. I was hoping someone on here could point us in the right direction and help us with finding a place to shoot. (I am not asking for your honey hole).

I am in my mid 40's and my friend is in his late 60's and we have been out west hunting for the usual, antelope, mulies and elk but all with outfitters....

We are open at this point of where we will be going but know we will be making stops in Wyoming, SD and Montana

thanks.... and help would be appreciated.

I was told the Rosebud national grasslands area in southcentral SD is decent in the late spring and early summer.

Find a likely town and head to the local grain elevator, stockyard or farm equipment dealer and ask some polite questions. You will probably get leads on several places to shoot.

just ask.....i remember one time we followed directions from an old rancher, you know the drill go 6 cattle guards threw the gate on the left or was it the right? follow the cow path open 2 more gates park by the post and the dog town will be over the hill to the left. we sat out there shooting some dogs thinking we must be in the wrong place should we be on the other side of the road??? anyway this old cowboy comes riding up on horseback. uh oh here comes our asschewing. oh well play dumb..thats the plan. turns out we are on the right land he just came over to check us out. he took a liking to us and invited us over to his place. he sais you know therz a few dogs here but i got a real problem.. if it not too much trouble could you help me out. so off we go following this dood on horseback. i shot the barrel out of my 223 ak that day.....
