I bought a used 220 medium weight rifle out there and was thinking for a walking rifle it might be cool to only buy 220 ammo and split them between both guns versus buying 223 the only trade off is barrel life but 100 rounds a day would be pushing it.
shots were 50 yards to 300 and we were not machine gunning them only 1 gun up at a time the other guy scanning 2 shots were all they allowed before you spent a lot of time scanning.
any thoughts?
If all your shots are under 300, go 17 hornet.......
17 Hornet would be a great purchase. A suppressor is another great way to go.
Think less noise and recoil. P-dogs will stay up better when subjected to less noise, and you will have more fun watching the impacts in the scope.
The best way to go is a 222 mag with 40 grain V-Max bullets at around 3900 fps. It is all you will ever need, and it is best to have about 4 rifles so you can keep up sustained fire...

Forget the .220 swift idea.
I noticed you did not give up the good one {22-250}. Get another one of those and you only have to have one type of ammo.

Also take a look at the 17 Fireball and 204 Ruger cartridges. I started shooting prairie dogs in 1949 with a 22 RF rifle. I live in p dog country and over the years have looked for the ideal p dog rifle and scopes. So far I have shot p dogs with 17 HM2,17 HMR, 17 Hornet, 17 Fireball, 17 Rem, 204 Ruger, 22 LR RF,22 WMR, 22 Hornet, 221 Fireball, 222 Rem, 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, 220 Swift, 243 Win, and a few big game rifles. If I could have only two p dog rifles they would be the 17 HMR and 204 Ruger. The rifles would have Leupold 6-18X AO scopes on them. I have enjoyed p dog shooting with all the rifles. P dogs become muzzle blast smart so I use the 17 RF rifles when shooting p dog pups in the spring when they first come out. This year I have a new accurate CZ 527 Varmint 17 Hornet rifle which I ll be trying out to about 300 yards. I also like low recoil rifles.

you boys mentioning that 17 Hornet, just had a thought cross my mind...that Ruger American Predator I picked up, is threaded from the factory for a suppressor....
one of those chambered in a 17 Hornet sure would be a great walk around varminter... bet they' sell the hell out of those, especially when components are readily available again....
The Ranch Rifle configuration in it also....
.204 for me but to each his own. When you take that long shot with any small caliber bullet it slows down so much it won't explode though. In my experience btw. So you get a big bad exit wound.
