Looking for suggestion on a scope for my 222 Remington.
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/11/15
Yes,,, I suggest putting one on it.

Kidding of course.

I'm a Leupold guy but there's something for everyone's likes and/or budget out there.

Depends allot of the intended use for the rifle.

I've never owned a Zeiss scope but the bino's I have will suck your eyes out of your head. There's some smoking deals on their 3-9 Conquest's out there right now. Somewhere around $299 IIRC. Might be worth a look for a general hunting scope.

Like FieldGrade said your intended purpose should dictate your scope selection. My current 222 wears a 6.5-20x40mm and is used for colony varmints, and targets, small targets big scope. My last 222 wears a 1-3x20mm, it was on an O/U combo gun used for coyote hunting, larger targets. In the hands of a new owner it accounted for two turkeys and six coyotes this spring so it seems to be about perfect for the intended use also.

Smaller power scope usually have a larger FOV which works well for called coyotes and are more than accurate enough for coyotes out to the effective range of a 222.

^^^^^^^^^

What they said.

I use my deuce for general purpose varminting so it ( they) have a 3x9 on top.

Mine is an older 721 and it looked goofy with a full sized scope on the small action.
I put a Burris Timberline 4.5-14 on and am happy with the optic and the proportions.

A 721 in a .222?????
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/11/15
Easy,,,,, you're slobbering on your shirt.....

I too have a 4.5-14 on mine. I shoot a few Ground Squirrels with it but mostly Rock Chucks where the shots can be a bit longer.
Doesn't matter though. I can't hit chit past 200 anyway.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/11/15
It aint that...its just that I never heard of one.......
Posted By: Dude270 Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/11/15
A 721 would lave plenty of room to seat the bullets long, for sure.

I had a 722 in the duece and while right much of a club, it was one of the most accurate factory rifles I ever owned

real deuces have bent bolt handles and wear cheap redfield 2-7x scopes....

Gotcha,,,, I have a hard time remembering which one's a long or short action.
A long action 222 would be,,, ahhhh,,, different.

Real Deuces have a magnum after the 222 and a Swarovski Z-5 3.5-18 scope with a BRX reticle on top...

Huntsman, Nice dogleg! 600 or 660?
My current duece is a 660, I'd love to find one of those B&C stocks for it. It's a shooter but the stock feels like a 2x4

Huntsman's 222 is the real definition of a "Walking Varminter." Very nice set-up.
Posted By: huntsman22 Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/12/15
dude, 600. johnny, shraps magnums are the real defininition of 'bench me, I'm too purty to carry'.....
Posted By: shrapnel Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/12/15

Here is a couple carry guns that will spank the gel and black stuff. The 222 weighs in at just over 6 pounds, scope included. The mag carbine a bit over that, but still probably lighter than you expect. Both are minute of gopher for as far as you can shoot. Never scrimp on the optics, you won't be sorry...

Sorry for the brain fart, it's a 722!

Thanks

The rifle will be used mainly for paper targets and the odd gopher shoot. Maybe if I can get the barns TSX to shoot out of it I might use it for a doe hunt.

Then I'd go for something in the 3-12, 4.5-14 range.
Good field of view for hunting and plenty of power out to 222 ranges.
Mirage becomes a bitch over 14X on a field gun anyway.

How much do you want to spend?

I used to have a couple of 222s, a Remington 660 with a Weaver K6 and a Remington 700V with a Weaver K10. My most frequently used 223s have 4-12x40s and 4-16x42AOs on them. If you don't need turrets, I think that the Sightron S1 4-12x40AO is a nice scope for under $200.

Simplyme: My various 222's are scoped with the following scopes:
#1 Remington 700 Classic = Weaver 4x16 (V-16)
#2 Remington 700 Classic = Lyman straight 10 power
#3 Remington 40X-BR = Leupold 24 power
#4 Remington 700 Varmint = Redfield 6x18
#5 Sako L-46 Varmint = Leupold 8 power Westerner
#6 Remington 722 = Lyman 10 power Perma-Center
The Berger 40 grain bullets are extremely accurate (paper fun!) and they are VERY explosive on smaller Varmints like Ground Squirrels and Prairie Dogs.
If I were to find another heavy barrel 222 Remington (and I am always looking for same!) and "I" wanted to shoot Ground Squirrels and targets then my first choice for a scope on it would be a Leupold 6.5x20 variable with the fine Du-Plex reticle.
Best of luck to you with whichever scope you choose.

I now have 3 rifles in .222 and my wife has yet another....all have 3x9 scopes on them, 2 Leupys, one Nikon, One Cabelas
Posted By: 222Rem Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/16/15
I've used a fix 6X, 3-9X, 6-18X, fixed 24X and a 4-16X. I'd suggest either the 3-9X for slim and versatile, or 4-16X for a little less slim and a little more versatile.

Let your budget and eye preference determine the brand. A decent bang for the buck scope worth considering is the Weaver V16. 4-16X is a handy range, an adjustable objective which you can leave set or dial in, semi-target turrets, and Japanese glass, in a fairly slim, light package. Leupold is still a great option in many cases, and the brand I own the most of by far.

Mine currently wears a 2-7 Burris Fullfield 1. I am going to repace it with a 2.5-8 VX3 that I have.

Oh, mine has a bent bolt handle.

I am a very big fan of anything with a gold ring but must say my burris 4.5x14 is the most pleasant to look through on an all day prarrie dog shoot..
Posted By: roninflag Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/18/15
my sako mannlicher has a 4.5-14 leup. my rem bdl has a 4.5-14,
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/18/15
My .222 has a 6.5 to 20 Leupold.. I put it on because it was just sitting on the shelf and I need a glass for the old .222.. I use mine for gophers, and p. dogs.. I agree with Field anything over 14 is a bit much.. If I were buying a scope for my .222 it would be a Leupold 4.5-14.. Have a couple Burris, but the Leupold is my pick..
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/18/15
Don't feel bad WCH,,,, I put a Weaver V-24 on my heavy barreled 17Rem Gofer gun. I never turn it up to 24X though.
I love the Weaver glass and fine crosshair with the dot but I should have saved myself some money and bought the V-16.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/18/15
Field, that would be about perfect for gophers and the .222 at least the way I shoot gophers..
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/19/15
Yea,,,, that reticle is great for vermin and paper punching but I wouldn't want it on a hunting rig. It could be a real bitch to see in low light or get lost in brush.

I can't complain about the glass though. It's as clear and bright as my VX3's.
Posted By: WyoCoyoteHunter Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/19/15
I have dots in quite a few scopes.. As you pointed out they are great for varmints, but not so hot on big game.. I do have one 3-9 Leupold that I set up for my old .300.. It has dots from 200-600 yards.. BUT the 200 yard dot is pretty big, too big for serious varmint shooting, but other than coyotes, this was a big game rig..
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Sope for my 222 - 08/20/15
Had a M8 with a 3MOA target dot on an old 788 (22/250) several moons ago. My first dedicated coyote rig.

It was great for shooting coyotes but impossible to sight in with 1" targets. Couldn't see the target hiding behind the dot in the scope at 100 without moving it around. I was pretty green back then but I finally got it figured out by drawing a cross hair on some paper plates. LOL
