Got a small deer lease where I can now hunt coyotes on. Never done that before and once our season is over (Feb 11th) I'd like to start.

Looking for some reading material or general info for a guy that's never predator hunted before.

I have plenty of deer rifles to choose from plus an AR with A Trijicon 1-4 and 223 T3 so I figure I'm good there. Need info on calling and such. No desire for the fur just want to help the deer herd and having something to shoot in the off season.

Predatormasters.com

Use the search function on the sight to find lots of info and answers to anything coyote hunting related. Good stuff there.

Good idea. I don't know of any good definitive work on the subject, theres lots of videos etc. though.

Coyotes don't allow for any mistakes. If you can successfully hunt them consistently, you can hunt anything.

The OP apparently hunts deer......intelligence wise a coyote makes a whitetail look like the class retard.

They are an extremely interesting animal to study, and to hunt.

I've been hunting coyotes for 30 years and still a beginner......

Waiting until mid-February to begin hunting isn't going to help a new coyote hunters success rate.

The Fox Pro forum would be a good place to start.

If your trying to actually control the coyote population on your lease and not just add a few more days to your hunting season. I'd be learning to set traps and snares before calling it as a Noobie and thinking you might do some damage to the coyote population.

A small lease is usually good for one stand a week depending on the wind and rain for when you hunt it, where a trap or snare works 24/7 and you can check you sets without ever disturbing them.

PM scenarshooter for advice. It seems he shoots more coyotes than there are days in the year

There is a book called "coyote hunting " by a man named Phil and last name started with an S. He ran a hunting and fishing resort. He passed away a few years ago. Very knowledgable man and interesting. I have purchased the book several times, loaned it without it ever being returned.

I found his number on the internet and called him one night. He strongly suggested using skunk cover scent. I need to buy and read it again.

First thing is what does your country look like?

I hunt pretty open country, so I shoot from prone position alot. It helps minimize my profile and allows me to set up for a shot. Alot of times I like to lay by a yucca to help hide my silhouette from the coyotes that may come in.
Keep the wind in your favor....in your face and be able to watch your downwind side if you have a crosswind. Depending upon territory I may favor a crosswind set up.
I've shot lots of coyotes with a simple .223. Depending on what your country looks like will dictate your scope needs and zero distance. I use a 100 yd zero, but have ballistic type reticles for farther shots. Hope this will help.

Poser? Hardly....I posted in the classified section today...yes. I guess I'm busted. I have 4k posts, true.....but most were done a long time ago. Most of the good guys have left, got banned or flamed out. I frequented the Lions bears and hounds man forum bc of the decoy dog discussions. Not anymore. Look I'm there, you even see a tab that says "sewing up a dog, tips, pics, advice"....it was posted on 5/28/10.
I've had posts since then, but when they started acting like A$$holes I drifted away. You must still be an active member I take it..My other prior post was in Oct, and then on Feb 28....

I Knew YOU Weren't Charlie....we've known each other long enough and have agreed far too long.
How is the hunting going? My 9yr old daughter just shot the CZ 223, and the 223 AI.....she shot a great group with that AI.....I loaded some 75's and she was hammering with it. Considering this was her first time shooting them, and just her 2nd time out ever....I think I'll keep taking her...lol.ill post a pic up.
I was banging metal out to 550 with that AI and 75's...

Cool beans getting the young one out shooting....I tried to build a 223AI once upon a time....bought an SPS tactical when they first came out because I liked the short and sassy looks and the "alledged" 9 twist.....turned out...some of the first ones got out of out of the factory with 12 twists.... mad

I heard that Remington was trading them out for 9's if you pressed the issue but I was so disgusted with big green I shot a few gofers with it and sold the dam thing (to one of the mods at PM laugh ).....

As far as fur goes....I haven't been out yet this year but we're getting some cold temps now so that fixing to change...

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours...stay safe...
