A buddy and I went out last Monday, called in this one. I shot him with my Rem. 700 SPS .204, 40gr. V-Max at about 40 yds. Hit him center of left shoulder. Made about a 6" entrance and took out the whole shoulder, just bone fragments left. Fell in his tracks, kicked once and was DRT. 26.6 lbs.

BRoper: Good work on the "fawn killer" there!
If I understand you correctly that 40 grain V-Max "splashed" there on the shoulder and made the 6" "entrance" hole?
Dead is dead and that's the objective.
All of the Coyotes I have shot with my 204's have been shot either with the 35 grain Bergers or the 32 grain Sierra BlitzKings.
I normally aim for the heart/lungs and can't remember hitting a shoulder dead on or head on.
Keep up the good work - there's more of them out there.
I have been Hunting Deer and Elk the past 14 days and have seen more than a dozen Coyotes in my Hunts and travels during that time.
Haven't shot one of them though - but will get after them when the Big Game tags are filled!
I enjoyed all the pictures in your file there.
Thanks.
Hold into the wind

I don't know if I'd call it a splash. There was a definite hole that you could see clear inside, the whole shoulder blade was just gone. I was kind of surprised at the amount of damage it did. That was the first coyote I've shot with my .204. There seems to be a lot of coyotes this year. I didn't realize the whole file shows, I'm not very computer smart, just figured how to post pictures. I enjoy all kinds of hunting but as I get older it seems like I'm concentrating more on varmint/predator hunting.

Nice work.

We have more splash wounds with the Vmax than any other bullet tried, in various .224cal. In the 243 though, the 75gr Vmax has been great, with only one coyote with serious pelt damage out of probably 30+ coyotes.

The Nosler Btip has been the opposite, where in .224 cal it works great and the 55gr Btip in my 243 has been not so good. I have had more runners and floppers with the 243 55gr Btip, at 3,900fps+, than with the 55gr Btip in my 222remmag or my son's 223wssm (at 3,800fps+). Go figure!

So far I've good luck with the 40 gr. V-max. It works good on badgers, just a bullet sized entrance and no exit. The only bullet I've had splashes with was the 39 gr. Sierra, one on a badger and one coyote. They both got away before I could make another shot. So we quit using them on anything bigger than rock chucks. I load 40 gr. V-Max in my .218 Bee and have good luck with it. Killed several badgers, a coyote, rock chucks jack rabbits and lots of ground squirrels with it, no problem. Also killed a coyote at 156 yds. with 35 gr. V0Max in the .218. 40gr. V-Max has worked good in my .222 on badgers but haven't killed a coyote with it. Have 55 gr. V-Max loaded in the .22/250 but haven't got a coyote with it either. I have a new Ruger American in .223 and I'm loading 50 gr. V-Max in it. So far I haven't killed anything with it. Going out this week and hope to blood it. Hoping for the best. I've also had good luck with the Norma ballistic tips. And the 32 gr. Varmageddon works well on badgers in the .204. I've got 70 gr. Varmageddons loaded in my 6 m/m Rem. but have yet to kill anything with it.

BRoper,
Posting the pic is pretty easy. Once the pic is uploaded to Photobucket and is up on your screen, there box at the lower right of the photo, should be IMG next to it. Put your cursor in the box and "copy" what's in the box. It should flash "copied" briefly. Then bring the forum back up, put your cursor in the "reply" box and "paste" the img code. A line of code should come up in the box. Click on the "Preview Reply" button and your pic should be there. Click on "Submit" to post. Hope that helps.

I think that's what I did.

BRoper ,

Another good coyote .

Is your camo jacket old ?
I have seen camo like that lately , reason I ask is I have an old [1983-1984] Jim Dougherty bowhunting jacket that looks just like yours .

Take care -Mike

Yes, my jacket is fairly old. A neighbor of mine had it and had never worn it or the matching pants. He passed away in about '92 and his wife new I was a hunter so gave them to me. I have no idea exactly when he bought them. I call it old school camo.

Hope to make some more "good" coyotes soon.

Gotcha .
Mine looks just like it except no chest pockets [archery] .

Cool looking coat and camo , keep up the good work .
