What is a good knife sharpener for the field?

I like to use these little portable sharpeners. I find they work best to keep a good edge on a knife, but they're to much work if you're trying to put a new edge on a completely dull knife. So don't wait to use one when the knife is dull, instead keep it handy and use it often while using your knife to keep the edge up. I thought the thing was a gadget, and a crock. What I'm talking about is those little orange crossed homes you see at the spotsman's show. They're called "LeBeau's Honer" and can be seen at honer.com.

All of the above mentioned devices do one tbing really well, remove precious blade material. As the salesman demonstrated, the knife isn't dull most of the time, the edge rolled and it needs to be straightened back out, not ground off.

I thought it was bunk until I bought one, and paid attention on how to use it.

Just offering an alternative to grinding or carving blade steel away (unless you like buying new knives more often!)

That is my pick, the blue one with a Gerber steel to finish the edge. If you don't want to carry the steel you can see if there is some other piece of metal in your kit that you can finish the edge with. Might work for some blades but not all.

the 3 wheel chefs choice (electric) works really well. I have used mine for a number of years. Its easy on your knives. I sharpen Bucks, Benchmade, Dexter Russel . . . hunting to kitchen knives. Cabelas, BPS, and other places sell it.

the best sharpner to keep on hand is a second knife.
