What is your favorite ammo for hunting squirrel with a 22 rifle. I like CCI when I can find them and hollow points seem to be more deadly but seem more destructive. I seem to favor solids overall but can't seem to get away from the the more deadly effect of HPs. Just curious about experience & preference of others.
My old 10/22 needed the CCI's for accuracy.

But I got a Western Auto Revelation that shoots everything. S, L, LR, cheap, boutique, solid, HP, brass, copper or lead.

I prefer solid lead, and aim for the head.
I definitely prefer HPs--Win powerpoints if available. CCI mini magsand Rem yellowjackets also shoot well and help if I'm a little off target. The yellowjackets will tear stuff up. I only shoot heads to save meat.

I like the subsonic hollow points. Eley and Winchester have been accurate and terminal.
I use nothing but CCI SV LR solids. They shoot great in all three of my .22s. In the last three yrs., I've only lost 3-4 squirrels, and it was because I didn't hit them right.

I tried a bunch of ammo but settled on SK High Velocty hollow points. I would rate Lapua HPs and Eley HPs as a close second.

I use to use the Eley high velocity hollow point before it was dropped from production. It was consistently accurate and worked well. Mini-Mags, Power Points and CCI Small Game Bullets are very good also if they shoot well from your particular rig. Nothing beats the subsonic hollow points though.
I've been using Winchester express in 37gr. in my pistol. It seem to be doing pretty good. I just picked up the pistol so I haven't had a chance to try out different ammo in it yet.
My Marlin 39A prefers Winchester Super X hp's and the 10/22 seems to like CCI by a small margin.

I recently traded for a little Browning .22 semi auto and I haven't got to spend enough time with it yet to find out what it wants.

Hopefully it'll be one of the brands I keep stocked up on.

Winchester sub-sonic hollow point are very accurate, and very effective in my rifles for squirrels. They will regularly shoot 1/3 inch to 1/2 inch five shot groups at 50 yds on a calm day.

The two rifles I use most often are a LH CZ 452 American and a LH Kimber of Oregon model 82.

I use a LH Cooper Arms 57M in 17HM2 for longer shots when the leaves have dropped.

And I take head shots with all the rifles.

The low report from the sub-sonics also helps to keep the squirrels from getting too spooky.

Cci sub sonic hollow point work well in my cz 455. Much quiter that high velocity stuff.
Most of the time now I use my old 5mm Sheridan air rifle to get some rats for gravy, but in a 22 I like standard V 40gr solids, pick only head shots. To me tree rat hunting is a relaxing pastime so I take my time. A 36 cal flintlock makes it fun too
Remington 582 ...cci mini mag...Winchester power points, cci green tag, Remington golden bullets.

CZ 455 American. Loves Ely Subsonic HPs...
My Kimber Hunter shoots Wolf Match Target ammo quite well. It is my favorite load for hunting gray squirrels. Head shots are the rule.

Remington Subsonics. They seem to be the best shooting ammunition in my .22s. As a bonus, they are relatively quiet, and don't seem to alarm other animals too much.

The 38 grain hollow point does expand, though does little to no meat damage when I am forced to take a body shot.

Last fall, I shot a Coyote at about 15-20 yards incidental to hunting squirrels. Round entered behind the shoulder and he hit the ground, graveyard dead, nary a step.

another vote for Eley subs here, usually in a CZ452 Style. My Cz's also shoot CCI subsonic HP's almost as well, but the Eley seemed a touch quieter...

Winchester also used to make a SSHP, sort of a truncated cone HP with a very large hollowpoint...they shoot well and seem to kill stuff very quickly.

I prefer either CCI Blazer or Winchester Wildcat 40 grainers...all my .22s seem to shoot 'em both well.
The last tree squirrel hunting I did with ,22's I used CCI hollowpoints.. Had a friend in W. Va. that killed hundreds of squirrel, maybe thousands.. The CCI hp was his pick..
Still using the CCI Green tag I bought 15 years ago. My Remington 552 loves 'em. Wonder what the actual velocity is out of its 24" barrel.
I like winchester power points but I haven't seen any in years.
I've used a large variety over the years; overall, I have gotten to like the good old common everyday high velocity hollowpoints available from many makers. Two favorites are the CCI Minimags and Federal 712 Game Shoks. There are niches where many different loads are good, but overall rounds like the CCI Minimags, Federal Game Shoks, Winchester Super X and Powerpoint, etc., have a great combination of good accuracy, good terminal ballistics, flatter trajectory, lube that doesn't rub off or collect pocket grit, and average price between el cheapo plinking ammo and high dollar target loads. Usually easily available, except for the events of the last few years, I.E. Obama fear panic/scalping/hoarding frenzy.
I use Winchester Power Points in an old Browning T-Bolt. I bought one thousand rounds of the Power Points when it became apparent Obama was going to be the Democratic nominee in 2008.
