It really is a one of a kind piece of Wood! How many blanks did you dig through to run across that one? Really is nice!
That stock is crazy cool, that critter is too.

Sounds like you may have bagged that somewhere other than Montucky. We have both Mesquite and Ringtails down here. smile

Whaaaat! For hunting hares...

Isn't your avatar kitty a leopard?
Posted By: Hogeye Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 02/22/16
Head of a cat, tail of a coon - looks like that critter is the product of a "menagerie a trois". Never saw nothin' like it.

Going to have it stuffed?

Avatar kitty is a leopard......but the story behind the name didn't involve any pet leopards! eek

Most guys I know that have killed one get it mounted but I used a 60 Gr. NBT on this one, high shoulders and neck shot......those areas were pretty well gone, and the head was messed up too. Tough to be 'fur friendly ' on a critter than small...
Posted By: kingston Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 02/22/16
Cam Newton would wear that tail with pride.

Cam's $12k fox tail
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 02/23/16
Damn! I smell a missed opportunity! cry
Posted By: kingston Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 02/23/16
Especially, seeing as the rest was devoured by a large cat, it wasn't a panther, but...

Thinking Cam needs to work on his pride a bit right now...

Nah, just his football skills, strength and conditioning. Remember this was not a contract year. He already got paid!

He may be sporting yeti and unicorn tails the next few years.

Did the coon screw the squirrel or did the squirrel screw the coon?

Wish I coulda seen that.

A clear case of too much gun. Too bad. A .22LR would have left something suitable for mounting.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 03/02/16
You're right of course...on this once in a lifetime occasion of calling in a ringtail, I should have dropped everything, dashed the 27 miles back to town, got my .22 and shot him with just a tiny little hole in his hide.
Run whatcha brung. I shoot yotes n cats.w a 6mm or 22-250, maybe even a 25-06 if thats what I have. I leave em lay anyway. As long as I am saving turkeys n bunnies I am sasified.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 03/02/16
I was running a 'fur friendly' load...but didn't know it would be called on to shoot something that small....... blush

The fur was pretty thin on that little rascal! grin
If it kills it is friendly in my mind. "Fur Friendly" in a 221 Furball may not be so friendly in my 22 Varminter.
I saw a black phase gray squirrel with a red tail one day when I was deer hunting. I could have killed it with my .30-30 but what would have been the point in that ? Just so I could say I once killed a black squirrel with a red tail and maybe take a pic of what was left ? Seems like a waste to me. I went back the next day with a .22 and killed it. It hangs in the living room today.

I have a ringtail I trapped and tanned back here.
The little chits are mean and smelly.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 03/03/16
I heard they were mean, and occasionally set up shop in old deer blinds and make a real pita out of themselves.
Ingwe, that is really a cool trophy. I know some guys who only keep 8 x 10 photos of their trophies. They are a whole lot cheaper and easier to clean than stuffed animals and much more likely to be kept by those who follow us.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 03/05/16
I'm leaning more and more that direction. The big stuff gets a European mount at best.....got a house full of taxidermy...
People wonder why I give away bear hides...
Posted By: Prwlr Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 03/31/16
Did you get it in Texas? Those used to run around my HS way back in the cave man days.
Posted By: ingwe Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 04/01/16
Yep...in the Hill Country.
Posted By: Prwlr Re: Heres an oddball for you! - 04/01/16
I grew up in SA and hunted near Kerville and Hondo with my uncles. Lots of squirrels and bunnies.
We used to get $2.50 a piece for them hides when we was in high school. That was about the time of the First Boer War.

Instead if a head mount, you should do an ass mount.

I like mine stuffed with onions and garlic, sprinkled with salt & pepper, and slow roasted over mesquite.
