Just wondering what you guys are shooting in your Renegades. 410 Great Plains wouldn't shoot well, so I might now try the 385 GP's. What charge are you guys shooting? I have both 777 and Pyrodex.

Thanks,
Brett

Brett

Why such a heavy slug ? 1 in 66 handles round balls and 1 in 48 handles conicals. Try 350gr maxi hunter or 370gr maxi ball with 90grs of either 777 or pyrodex. That's the load I shoot with my T/C Hawkens 50 cal 1 in 48 twist. Mine wouldn't handle 410gr slugs either. Trust me, you don't need them. That 370gr maxi ball will drop them where they stand. I've had mine since 1986 and still groups 1 1/2 inches at 100 if I do my part. Let me know what she does. Curious.

Most 1/48 twists handle bullets and round ball well. My 50 cal likes both!

Most people with TC,s I know, like the maxi balls real well.

I shoot lots of REAL conicals. I cast them with a lee mold. I've been happy with the groups I get with them.

I've found I get my best groups when I use Goex 3f black powder over the pyrodex. Never buy 2f anymore, and if I use Pyrodex I use the Pyrode p, and not the RS.(When using the 3f or Pyro P, use less powder. Instead of 90 grains of 2f Goex I use 80 to 85 grains of 3f.

If I hunt with the 50 this year,
The 50 cal. bullet I will use for elk this season , is a 420 grain shocker bullet made by Lyman.

Bought a 62 cal. smooth bore barrel for the Renegade from Green Mountain this year, and I like the results I'm getting with it out to 75 yards. That big old .595 round ball should do the job on Mr Bull!, and using #6 lead shot, I can hunt grouse for camp meat.

I got a .50 Renegade last year and gave it a once over. Redid the wood and made it look pretty good. The former owner had it stored for years ,but at least he packed the barrel with bearing grease. Pain getting out, but bore is in great shape. It also has a T/C tang peep sight.

Finally shot it 2 weeks ago. It loves 70 grs Goex 3f. A .490 Speer round ball and .015 Ox-Yoke prelubed patches. I was shooting at 50 yds. and had to only move the peep a click or two to the left. Accuracy with this load was great, with more than a few holes touching.
A 1 in 48 will accurately shoot roundballs.

I've only worked with 1 .50 Renegade. It wouldn't shoot conicals for squat. 10" groups at 50 yards. Switched to round balls and it got down around 4" at 50 yards. The more powder I threw at it, the better it shot. I tried Goex FFg, Pyrodex RS and Select, and one other but I forget what it was. Didn't seem to matter. Changed caps, didn't seem to matter. I settled on a book-max (TC manual) load of FFg and a patched speer round ball.

I called TC. They were not helpful. Seemed to think that was FINE accuracy.

I sold the gun. I'd had a Big Boar that'd do 4" at 100 yards with conicals ... when it'd go off. This .50 was a replacement for it. I decided to go back to .58 and ordered a renegade .58 from the custom shop (fox ridge). Like the .50, it won't shoot conicals, same 10" or bigger 50 yard groups, but at least it'll hold 1.5" at 50 yards with a patched ball and at least a .58 patched ball packs some weight.

I don't know if it's just small data sample size or what, but the TC muzzleloaders I've worked with that have the QLA system do not shoot nearly as well as the older guns without it.

I think I've bought my last TC muzzleloader. I'll probably keep the .58 for patched ball use and get a Lyman GPH with the 1-32 twist for conicals.

I use 90 grain equivalent of Pyrodex RS and the Lee REAL bullet, - it is very short and I believe it is 240 grain. Best compromise between conicals and patched ball, and it shoots very good groups, about 3-4" at 100 yards. Killed many deer with that load.
