There is another thread on Conical Accuracy that piqued my interest, but I didn't want to hi-jack.

I shoot a TC Renegade, 50 cal and am switching from patch & ball to maxis, 370 grn. I saw one mention of trying 80 grns. Does anyone else have favorite loads for 370 that they can share...and favorite lube to put on the maxi?

I use Swiss FFFg with 50 TC Hawken. Most accurate load for me is 80 grains. 90 will work well, but recoil is noticeable. 100 grains was not accurate for me, and recoil was nasty. TC bore butter or crisco for a lube.

80-90gr of FFG or 777 has been the sweet spot for conicals in a couple of 1-48" TCs for me, pretty much what TC always recommended. Plenty of power for game. Various .50/70 rifles shooting a similar load probably killed more bison than any other combination.

My Renegade used to shoot the 385 gr. Hornady Great Plains bullet more accurately than the T/C Maxi-Ball or Maxi-Hunter.

So there's another option, should you need it.

90 grains of Goex works well in my TC Hawkin and the Maxiball

I would start with 80 gr, shoot 3 times, then 90 gr: shoot 3 times, then 95, and 100 gr. Whichever is most accurate and you can stand the recoil IN YOUR GUN is the one I would use.

Every gun is different, and no one can tell you what will work. It is just a matter of trial and error.

I assume you are talking Maxi-balls and they are good bullets, but I have also used 350 gr Hornady FPBs in my renegade. Since Maxi-balls have gotten more expensive, the FPBs are not any more expensive

This was a great suggestion...thanks! I recently worked up a load and found the hornady GPs to be very predictable. It helped that I had recently installed a williams peep. The combination of the two allowed me to dial in with relative ease.

80 sounds about right. I used 100 in my .54 with maxiballs. miles

I had the best groupings w/90# FFG in my Renegade using TC Maxi Hunter.

I went from Maxis to Lee LEAL bullets over 90 grains of 2F or Pyrodex.

As the other guys are stating, any of the lead conicals in the 350-385 grain range for the .50 should work pretty well between 80-100 grains, most often between 80 and 90, and 80 is a good place to start.

Pure BP or substitute?

I am using geox, FFF, just a hair more than 80 grains.

I will say it was hard to find the Hornady GP bullets as most places online were sold out. I found them at two specialty shops that don't have online shopping.

With pure BP, and FFF, I think you'll like what you find at that dosage (a hair more than 80 grains).
