63 yr old hunter and new to smokepoles. What is the best most accurate muzzleoader for my new adventure.

Plan on getting my first one before fall. As of now I'm considering the CVA Wolf. Good info and opinions here:

Depends on what you're looking to get out of the sport, "do it the way they use to" or "easiest way to fill a special seasons tag". Not knocking either one but hard to recommend equipment without knowing your intentions. Regulations where you intend to hunt play a part too.

Stafford, with a modern scoped ml with a friend who's been there a few times with a guide he became friends with. But we are still working things out and nothing is set. I haven't even begun looking at guns yet.

A lot of options out there in break opens and bolt actions. Personally I'd cruse the gunshops and look for a clean used T/C Omega.

A local guy on another web site wants to trade me an Omega for my very nice push feed M70 Featherweight 22-250. What's an Omega worth in nice shape with a Bushnell 3200? thanx

I don't know what the scope is worth but a good used Omega is worth about $225-$250 here.

Depends on which Omega. They made several variations of stainless or blue metal with synthetic or laminated stocks. My LGS has 5 and asking prices are $275 (plain blue/syn) to $575 (stainless/syn with Leupold 2x7). Would think your M70 is worth a bit more.

Encore is a pretty good choice because it can be used for other centerfire applications. They are also easy to clean, and have a good trigger.

My Omega is a bit more accurate than my Triumph but priming the Triumph is much easier.

What ever you get make sure your eyes can handle the sites...

If you've never MZ loader hunted here in KS.. It's hot and rainy during that season, but you can still hunt deer along hedge rows pretty effectively if you are a patient person.

...also that the stock design actually lets you use the irons. I've handled a couple that had combs so high that I couldn't get down low enough to see through the nice open sights they carried.

By all means check the regs first, then decide how you want to play the game based on the terrain and your personal goals. Don't let the extremists at either end dictate how you hunt.

The regs allow a normal scope as far as I can tell.

I can tell you the Leupold ultimate slam 3-9x40 is spot on with its hold over dots on my Omega using 150 gr of pyrodex pellets and a 250 gr bonded shockwave. Good to 300 yrds. Range tested and lots of practice.

I shoot an Encore and love the thing. I've got a slug barrel and a 30.06 barrel as well. 125 yrd. shots are not a problem with the muzzle loader. I've got a little 1.5-5x32 T/C Hawkin Hunter scope on it. I load it with three 50/50 Triple 7 Pellets and a 295 grain Bower Belt with either ballistic tips or hollow points, it doesn't matter.

But anything T/C, would do.

If you really want to turn it into a rifle loonie adventure, Google smokeless conversions and look at the performance they are capable of.

Newbies should stay far away from smokeless MLs. Wait a couple of years to gain experience and knowledge of MLs first.

Even then, I wouldn't venture into one and I've been muzzleloading for over 25 years. Vast majority of deer (example) are shot at 100 yards or less with any kind / stye of muzzleloader

FYI, the Omega is known as one of the five best inlines ever produced. Buy it, if it's clean and reasonable.

Another vote for the Encore. Its more accurate than I am. The one I would avoid is the Traditions, Pursuit if memory serves me. It had the same spring controlling the hammer and trigger, which meant I had no way of adjusting the trigger pull.

I looked at all options before I finally settled on an Omega as my first ML and I've never regretted it. I haven't even considered buying something different.

The stock fits me well for a both peep or a low mounted scope. There are other MLs that my friends have (with scopes) that I've shouldered and they don't fit me at all.

An Omega is a well built solid choice and it shoots sabot projectiles extremely well.

Omegas are nice for sure. The one I had shot real well. Only thing I didn't really like was the tupperware stock. The wood stocks are much better, imo.

I personally own a bunch of Knights. Top quality USA made and they drive tacks. You can purchase a brand new .52 Disc Extreme for $400. That is a great price for an upper end production rifle. Tons of bullets that can be shot in that rifle also. Just a thought fwiw.

I would say for First Timer status and not knowing if you will continue down the smokey road, go OMEGA.

My cousin purchased a TC Impact for our Kansas Muzzleloader hunt last year and I was impressed with the way it handled and shot. I like the fact that the breeching levers are on top the receiver like my H&R Sidekick. I highly regard both the Impact and the H&R. H&R's are nolonger being made.

Just ordered an Impact this morning.

Good Choice. My cousins Impact is one helluva good shooter.
You also don't have to worry about an underneath type breeching lever being inadvertently knocked open when walking in thick cover. My nephews CVA is easily opened in the brush.
