I would like to take advantage of Texas's muzzleloader season.
I owned a 45 TC Hawken years ago but sold it. I would like something more period correct in a caplock to hunt with.
Can someone suggest a decent one to look for that is not over 450$ or am I asking to for too muck rifle for not enough money?
seems like Lyman used to make one that was pretty nice.
what are you looking for?
wood stock, dark furniture, etc?
Lyman or Pedersoli are probably good choices. Cabelas often runs a sale, and if you are lucky, they will have some coupons available at the same time. I was going to buy a Persoli before Christmas for under 500, but chose something else.
Lyman Plains model available at Midsouth, Nanchez, and others are usually a bit more.
Dixie Gun Works also has a nice selection.

Track of the Wolf has a nice selection.

I would look at Lyman's web page, Pedersoli web page, decide on a model, and look at gunbroker.
Lyman used to, don't know if they still do, sell "cosmetic blem's" on their site for great prices.

Not sure if they still do?
You can get a TC Impact for less than $400. I'm selling my TC Black Diamond 50 cal for $300 and that includes a custom Walnut stock.
What ever you buy, make sure the sights are not plastic. They tend to break pretty easily
lyman or the new traditions mountain rifle or their newest for 2017 Prairie hawken. Your price however is a bit off scale for the fancier rifles.
Lyman Great Plains Rifle. I don't know what they sell for now but shop around, plenty of places carry them.
You can get a Lyman Great Plains rifle kit for even less.

And make one.

Some of us (like me) who made one don't use it because of our eye sight going bad..

So you may just want to do a "WTB" used Lyman GPR for X... you may be very happily suprised.
There's a like new T/C 54 cal Renegade for $275 in the classifieds!! Be hard to find a better one for that price
Take your pick.

Lots of used TCs pop up on GB, often at good prices. Wait for a good one at the price you can afford. A Lyman Deerstalker might be available new in your price range; Great Plains rifles are well over it.

If you cruise the gunshops, you might find a real deal in the used racks. I picked up a NIB Renegade some years back (without the box) for $185. Just be sure you check the bore out.
I was in the same boat about 5-6 years ago, bought a Lyman Great Plains Hunter and have been very happy. If your not looking for something period correct, etc. I would get a deerstalker, nice sights and very hunter friendly stock\length.

Ive heard good things about the pedersoli guns, but no personal experience.

As others have mentioned, the kit guns can save you a little $ and make a good winter (maybe summer in your case) project.

Best of luck with it, my Lyman is rare in that it is a gun that I bought in the last decade and havent had thoughts of trading or selling off for sonething else 😀
Also--- HuntingPA.com forum has a classifieds section, and flintlock season just ended for most of the state. There are probably half a dozen flintlocks for sale on there right now. Happens every year....after the season ends, guys get good and tired of hunting in the late season and sell off their rock lock.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Another vote for the Lyman Deerstalker.
Kit hawken $250...not mine, don't know the guy either
