Other than Alaskas wolf man Frank Glaser what are some good books? I have a friend writing a research paper and want her to have a balanced perspective, rather than the agenda of academia.

Thanks in advance.

Thousand Mile War is a great book.

For a great look into the trapping and subsistance life 80 years ago from a womans perspective, have her read Born on Snowshoes by Evelyn Berglund Shore.
For a more modern look have her read any of Seth Kantner's books. Shopping For Porcupine might be the best for her to start with.

Shadows on the Koyukuk is a good autobiography of Sidney Huntington's life.

Alaska Yukon Trophies Won and Lost by G.O. Young.

This is not an easy to book to find at a reasonable price but it's well worth the effort.

I would suggest Alaskan Adventures by Jay Williams. Love his description of his go-to 03 Springfield. Served him well with only 3? Barrel changes and one new action...

The Way We Were, by Russell Anabelle. Fantastic book, a friend of mine loaned it to me a while back. Actually I believe there are several volumes.

A bit dry, but informative about life during the early 1900s on the Tustumena bench ares.

Reading his "Ordinary Wolves" now and am liking it.

Jeff Davis wrote "Return to Toonaklut" about Annabelle and the area around the Parks/Glenn Y and Goose Creek. Interesting read and pretty critical of old Russ...

All of Rearden's books are good. "The Wolves of Alaska" is among the best in that it makes you really happy when you finally get finished, but realize you picked up a lot along the way.

Our Rearden library gets larger every now and then..... not disappointed yet....

Has anybody ever read anything about Hjalmar "Slim" Carlson?

I picked up his name in a book about Alaska and was trying to find a book specifically about him.

Thanks

"50 Years Below Zero".. Brower

Wilhelm Stephenson's book - can't think of the title.

"Tomorrow Came Too Soon" - an article, not a book. Jim Greiner.

Greiner also has a book about Don Sheldon- I have an autographed copy. Somewhere. Also can't think of the title.

"Bush Pilot" I think. Bud Helmricks.

Wonder if Kantner will give me a discount if I buy all his books at once? Probably not, even tho I pay my rent on time. Mostly. smile On the other hand, he does let me borrow one of his big toboggans whenever if he's not using it...

He told me once that he busts his butt 7 days a week so he doesn't have to have a job..... and it's true. smile

Arctic Village by Bob Marshall. It's about the early days in the brooks range around Wiseman and Bettles. An onsite observation of interior Alaska by a white man.

"Wager With The Wind".

Great story. Poorly written.

Worth the read, nonetheless.
