That is twice for him. He is either extremely unlucky, or is very good at putting himself in bad situations with bears.
He shot well, improving luck considerably.
I believe he shot off some of his own toes so I wouldn't say he shot that well.
I'd say trading a couple of toes for your life is a pretty good bargain. Armchair quarterbacking not withstanding. Stuff happens on the real world.
From the first paragraph in the article.
"While backing away from the sow, Woodman fell and accidentally shot himself in the left foot."
If I found my foot between myself and an aggressive sow...........that foot would be fugged.
shooting yourself in the foot doesn't mean much until you know the results.... may or may not even involve toes..
(From the Down East Saloon )
Sounds like his middle toe was removed.

It depends. Could be he wasn't wearing shoes, so he shot himself before he realized it was only a bare foot.

Reading between packing our AK bags.... that was good for a snort on the keyboard!

He put one in the bear's eye (almost) and one in the chest. If he shot his foot while backpedaling and falling down, I can forgive that. The man shot well.
That is twice for him. He is either extremely unlucky, or is very good at putting himself in bad situations with bears.
For guy that got out and did it over a 20+ year period, in Alaska?
If your perspective is Nebraska...

Good point... and many wish it had only been two...
Coming out of that pond, I'll bet that sow looked to be running on water!
and the comments... bear spray... fools all over the place.
From the CM article:
"The bear scat reminded Woodman of the gun. He doubted he’d need it, but if he did it wouldn’t do much good stuffed away. He pulled the chunky pistol out of the pack, loaded it, and slipped it in his pocket."
Not only did he have the pistol and know how to shoot it, he took it out of his pack and had it handy when needed.
My respect grows.
I can certainly see how someone would stick their foot up to protect themselves. This isn't something that you likely train for!
Thanks for the link!
Excellent writing on display there.
