Yeah, that's real common where we hunt.

Select against more brow tines for a couple decades and see what happens.

Why would I do that, I'm not hunting for antlers and I'm perfectly fine with this years bull.
Posted By: rost495 Re: 2016 moose hunt - 10/04/16
I think it was a comment on the 4 brow tine rule making those almost non existant it seems unless they get really big and old.

Dang nice bull. Confirms what Carolyn and I thought we had in the bag on the 15th was very much so pushing 65.

But I'd be happy as heck when they'll let me shoot a spike fork.
Posted By: Sitka deer Re: 2016 moose hunt - 10/04/16
Yes, it was a comment on the 3/4 brown tine rules.

Actually, this year was a banner year for brow tines... mine was 5x6, buddy shot a 3x4, another 4x4, another was 2x3. Of the 13 bulls our "group" shot they were more than 50% 4 brow tine bulls though all but two were over 50".
Posted By: AkMtnHntr Re: 2016 moose hunt - 10/04/16
Problem is, bulls get shot as soon as they are deemed legal. It's been that way since as long as I've been hunting in this area. That said, I won't be one bit surprised if we see several 4 or 4+ brow time bulls in there next year.
Posted By: dale06 Re: 2016 moose hunt - 10/04/16
Congratulations, looks like a huge one to me.
I am 65 years old and in vg shape. Have never hunted moose but seriously thinking about it in 2017. I better get it done soon or I'll be too old.

Congrats John!!! That is a whooper for sure!!! Be good to catch up with ya. Maybe a sled ride out of my cabin up in Cantwell is in order and I can hear how this hunt went down in person!

In their third year a bull usually has all the brow tines he ever will have... minor points may come up later, but not usually.
Posted By: rost495 Re: 2016 moose hunt - 10/05/16
in our area there used to be a number of bulls with 4 brow tines. THat was over 10 years ago.

Now its rare to see a bull with 4. Unless he is over 50 really easily.

Every study on deer, everywhere...

But one in hand is "Antler Development in Cervidae" page 42-44 in a paper by Vince Van Ballenberghe.

Year to year changes in antler formation are minor and it is amazing how similar they are from year to year.

Im having a hard time finding anywhere where it even remotely mentions regarding moose that they will have most their brow tines at 3 years old.

Year to year changes can be dramatic in both size and characteristics. There are no rules when in regards to antler development.

Your inability to find references is no indication of the lack thereof. I gave you a citation for a paper written by Van Ballenberghe and could also point you to several others. It is out there.

Phug that too old crap. I'm 68.. I'm thinking at least one more old and slow sheep hunt.... smile.

Moose are easy. Until you shoot. But then there is all the time in the world- up to 4 days. Unless Griz shows up. Then shoot twice...

What SD said on brow-tine.

I think (my reference book is 600 miles south), what a bull has for brow tines in it's 3rd year is it is mentioned in "Ecology and Management of North American Moose".

I have watched two different bulls from yearlings to 5 years old. What they had in 3rd year was what they had in 4th and 5th year (both 2X2). Both were marginal 50" legal in year 5 and I didn't dare shoot. (50 inch or 3 brow tines on one side regs. I hunted the same two roughly one square miles - 5 miles apart - every year for 25+ years. I had a pretty good handle on the moose there)

On one, I didn't moose hunt the 6th year at all, and never saw him again. On the other, I also never saw him again, having shot a different bull year 6. Some other basted shot them both!!!! I think. And they were named, dammit!!!.... smile

The only researchers that found it true were the ones that studied it...
