My Uncle who is very ill stopped by my parents house while I was at work the other day. He dropped off a shot gun that was his fathers (my grandfather, mothers side) and wanted me to keep it in the family. I felt honored to be given this family heirloom.
I don't know anything about this gun other than it is a Single Shot Remington (12GA). I looked up on Remingtons Website about gun history and it appears to be a Model 1893 No.3, but I am not sure. They were made between 1893 & 1903, 86,000 produced. Serial Number Blocks 1,001 - 90,000, also it was produced in NY.
What can you tell me about this old peice, is it a M1893 No.3? Year produced? Value? etc, etc?

Couldn't find a whole lot but here's what I found:
Your pictures match the one in my book "The American Shotgun"by David F. Butler. The model 1893 No.3 was made until 1902 and 86,805 were produced in gauges of 12,16,and 20 at a price of $10 and in gauges 10,24,and 28 at a price of $11. The 10 gauge models came in bbl lengths of 32" and 34" lengths while the smaller gauges were available in bbl lengths from 28" to 34". In 1902 a slightly modernized version was introduced(No.9)in 12 and 16 gauge that was similar in appearence to the No.3 but had an auto ejector. A total of 65,698 were produced before discontinuation in 1910.
In the Blue Book these shotguns are called the Model No.3 Rider single barrel and the Model No.9 Rider single barrel. The No.3 is listed at $325 @ 100% and the No.9 @ $375 @ 100%.

Thanks for the reply and the information EZEARL. Also, I found out from the Remington Society that this gun is a Model 9 (1902 - 1909), because it has the Removable Hinge-pin specific to that model.
Still pretty cool stuff. The gun appears funtional, though I have no plans to fire it, just from a saftey aspect.
Now I just need to build a mantle over the fireplace to display it on.

Have it checked out by a smith and no magnums but, if it were my grandfathers I would not only shoot it but I would make shure I took some game with it. I'm going on a pheasant hunt in a couple weeks and I'll be using a SxS 12 gauge hammer gun that was my uncles.
