I've got a line on a Remington Mohawk 600, factory stock, rebarreled to 6x47, complete with dies, brass, bullets and a 10x Weaver AO scope. So, what's the scoop on this caliber?

I've read one article (which IIRC, was written by Dogzapper in Handloader) on the 6x45 as well as Layne Simpson's article on why he doesn't like the 6.5x47, but haven't run across anything specifically on this cartridge. (If I'm missing an article please let me know, I have most of the issues of Handloader and Rifle from the 70s and 80s, still looking to complete the collection though). From my mild Googling earlier it seems this was once a popular benchrest cartridge, but is somewhat hamstrung by intermittent availability of 222 Rem brass. Since this rifle comes with over 1000 pieces of brass, if I buy it that won't be a problem

6x47 Lapua, or 6mm-.222Rem? They'd both be a 6x47, but the case head (because the parent case) is much different.

6X47 is the 222 Remington Magnum necked to 6mm. Be glad brass isn't an issue. You should get close to 3000 fps with a 70 gr bullet. If I am going to mess with a small wildcat, I would go with something on the 223 Remington case and have done so with the 25TCU but wouldn't have gone to the improved case if the rifle hadn't come complete as what you're looking at. The performance of the small cases will surprise you as they get a high percentage of the performance you see from much larger cases. I get right at 3000 fps with RL7 and a 75 gr bullet in the 25TCU. Accuracy is excellent, recoil minimal and it is just fun to shoot. I really have to take a deer with this rifle one of these days but always seem to leave it behind for a rifle that's louder. Ward

So what IS the .222 necked up to 6mm??

I'd call it the 6mm-222 and the case is about 43mm long.

I owned one in the early 1970's. It was a Sporter Weight Benchrest Rifle that I shot regularly at matches. It was very accurate and I set a national record with it at 200 yards. IIRC, I used 748 powder, and a 70 grain bullet with Remington Benchrest Primers, THE primer of choice back then.
I would like to have one now, a regular sporter as they are a fun gun. I have a barrel sitting in the corner that is a regular 222 Rem barrel with pitting in the bore. I've been considering about getting it bored out to 6mm and having it chambered for a 6x47.
It was the only rifle I ever owned that required bullets to be seated hard up against the lands for good accuracy.

One of my Remington 40X's is chambered in the 6mmx47. It is now on it's 2nd bbl. It is a caliber that I lusted after for a long time.

I once owned a M-600 Rem in .223 (Rechambered .222) that didn't shoot that well. I wrote a letter to Kenny Jarrett about having it rebarreled to 6x47. I even included a SASE, and he couldn't even do me the honor of an answer. Kind of soured me on the project and I sold the rifle. (At this point I wish I wouldn't have...)

At any rate, I now wish I had continued with the project. As a "Walking Varminter" in that caliber is attractive to me. Altho' I now have a Ruger #1 in 6x45, so the need is not that pressing.

Most 6x47's that I've heard of have been built with a 1~14" twist. Were I to do the project today, I think I'd use a 1~12" twist. I don't believe the former will shoot anything heavier than a 75 gr. bullet. Likely with the latter, one could use up to 85 gr. In that respect, it could double as a light deer rifle, if one wished.

RIGHT ON, I had a 6TCU, aka 6x223 Improved on a 21" TC carbine thumbhole fajen stock, and requested a 12" twist, just would stabilize an 85 BTHP sierra gameking-a known deer killer.

A 10 twist would not be bad either, but the round lacks oomph to drive heavier vld type bullets i.e. 105-108s so an 8 twist is not useful IMHO.

For me, I'd go straight to a 6PPC or better yet, 6BR for more performance, which is what I shoot - the BR.

Chris Matthews of Longshot Rifles has built a few 6x47s and I also think Karl at Kampfeld Custom has also built some.

I just put together a 6mm-204 (6mm-222 Rem Mag Imp). It looks like it will be a winner. I built it for a light weight coyote calling gun 60gr Seira HP are accurate to 300yds. I would have built a 6x47mm if the there was a better supply of brass. As it is 204 sizes down just fine to make 222Rm or 6x47mm cases.

It is indeed the 6x47 on the 222 Remington Magnum case, I was incorrect in my original post. The dies are Hornady custom.

Sounds like you're good ta' go! And will have a blast every time you take it out!
