Hi, I have a rifle marked Henriksen on top of the barrel. I assume this rifle was made by Iver Henriksen. It is marked 25 Neidner on the side. Is it spelled wrong? I see it both ways when I plug A.O.Neidner in the search engine. I kinda think the caliber was unmarked when it was made. I have rifles marked C.M.O'Neil and J.R.Buhmiller on the barrels.They have no caliber markings. Did they not mark the caliber of the rifles back then? I'm thinking about having the other two marked. Would this hurt the value of the rifles? The Buhmiller marked barrel is a 22-250. The O'Neil rifle is a 333 OKH belted. It seems crazy not to have a rifle marked. Thanks

The spelling is Niedner, pronounced "need-ner".

Both are stamped NIEDNER, just like in the ad above.




And Whelen is WhelEn, not "WhelAn," pronounced "Whay-len," not "Whee-len." (Or so the good colonel thought � but he didn't know today's quasi-literate shooters or their criteria for such things!)

It perturbs me that it is spelled wrong on a nice rifle. The workmanship is on par with the Al Biesen rifle that I own. It is a mauser action. If it is indeed an Iver Henriksen rifle I'm proud to own it. I learned of Henriksen,Buhmiller and O'Neil on this forum. Thanks. It got me enterested in the old gunmakers.

I believe Mr. Niedner was of German descent. In the German language, I before E is pronounced EEE. E bfore I is pronounced EYE. This is at least a rule of thumb, if not an absolute.

It was a play on words.

In German, "die" is a word for "the" and is pronounced 'DEE'

"I" before "E", except after "C".

And I flunked spelling.
