I'm curious will a 1 in 10 280 or 7x64 stabilize a 160 gr Accubond or similar bullet? It seems a bunch of the LH guns I'm looking at have the 1 in 10 twist. I have always liked the 280 and would like to buy one or maybe the very similar 7x64. I have a 260 and a 35 Whelen, the 280 would be a great all around gun for deer, moose and elk in more open country IMO.

gerrygoat even if it didn't, there are a pile of other good 7mm bullets that will stabilize and work well in your country, from a 10 twist 280.

Things like a 140-150 Partition come to mind...it has been awhile since I have had anything slower than a 1-9 in any 7mm....but I know at some point we have had a 10 twist 280...just can't remember details.

I agree with Bob, there are other bullets that will suit you fine other than the 160gr. I have a 280AI and almost exclusively shoot 140 and 150 gr bullets. Speed kills.

I love the 140 gr TTSX, the 140 gr Partition, 150 gr BT's and 150 Gr partition. They have all performed flawlessly. Last week I shot a deer that dressed out at 208 lbs, at 475 yards and the 140 gr Partition punched through leaving two holes. DRT.

BTW- I have the other two calibers you mention and I cannot think of a better battery of cartridges for NA game.

My 10" twist .280 stabilized the 162gr A-Max just fine where I live, so the 160AB should be no problem.

My .280 ~1991 M70 Fwt Classic CRF has a 10" twist.
No problems w/ 160's, and tremendous results w/ NP 150's

What is the appeal of the 7x64 ?

My both my 280AI's have a 10 twist and will stabilize the 160NAB, but I use the 160NP and BTH it is very accurate.

Thanks guys, thankfully there are a lot of good 7mm bullets out there to try if for some reason the longer 160's don't work out. As for the 7x64 in the world of left hand rifles only Browning currently chambers the 280 as far as I know but Sako, Tikka and Zastava chamber the 7x64. That's the only reason for it, I would prefer a factory gun in 280.

It will stabilize the 160's just fine.

I'm not impressed by the body taper on the 7x64.
State of the art in 1917 though.
Not to mention ammo/brass availability in the Great White North.

You could probably rechamber a 7x64 to .280, or the AI version of your choice w/o too much issue.
Your desired throating might determine whether any set-back is even needed.

Good Luck with your quest.
