Any recommendations on what components to assemble to set up an affordable semi-custom bolt action in this cartridge? thanks in advance. Factory ammo is available from Prvi Partisan; reloading dies available from RCBS... 125 grain 8mm bullets available at Midway (Hornady, with a BC of .23 - GAD!). Intent would be an easy handling short range eastern deer rifle for my son, who is an 8mm nut. He would love to hunt with a Sturmgewehr, but those are out of his price range. smile

125 grain bullet at 2250fps would make it a reasonable white tail rig provided he keeps his shots true.

i am thinking maybe he could set it up on a Model 7 as the base rifle?

I had a 7BR M7 done up, 120s did 2875mv....

If I did again, I'd do a 6.5BR or Grendel for better BC for bullet weights best suited for a small round.

M7, w/a 20-21" bbl, contour of choice would make a nice rig for what you want to do. I also like this round...for that purpose. A 180 BT at 2400-2500 would be nifty.

what diameter bolt is needed? .473? .378?

My Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions lists the rim diameter as being .470". It suggests a form die be used to make cases from .308 Win.

The only load listed is the 125 gr. Hornady: 21.5 grs of IMR-4198 @ 2100 f.p.s. That should give it roughly the same range capabilities as the .30-30 Win. or perhaps a bit less... smile

As always, I suggest that if anyone is bent on building a wildcat cartridge, then the Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions is a worthwhile investment. If for no other reason than to educate oneself as to what wildcats have already been made, or what cases can be formed into what... grin Besides that, it's interesting reading... wink

I like the Kurz, thought of having a carbine Encore barrel made up for one.

But the bullet choices stopped me.

I think both the 7.9X33mm and the 7062X39mm would make dandy deer rifles for moderate ranges, but I'd go with the 6.5 Grendel if I were making a new rifle - excellent ballistics at all ranges.

yep, 7.9x33 is the only cartridge he is interested in, other than the standard 8mm Mauser and my 7x57 he always hornswaggles when we go hunting... smile

I'm a fan of 8mm.
That said, a 7.62x39 is readily available in several rifles, Cz, Rem 799, Zastava, Ruger 77 & mini.30.

The Remington/Winchester 123 gr. soft points, 1 or the other shoots well from all my rifles. Some of the Russian hollow point and soft points shoot/perform well.

You could re barrel a Cz or Zastava or Ruger to the Kurz, or even a cheapo Savage. The round may function fine from one of the production 7.62 rifles, with little hassle.

If you are a competent, patient shooter the 7.62x39 will take whitetails at 200 yards with ease, 'yotes waay out there.
Just make him stick with the good old 8x57....if he wants the full German thing, find him a Mauser with set triggers and a butterknife. I had one of those.

Guys, thanks for the posts, and the "consider this and consider that" in lieu of the 7.92x33 Kurz, but looking for alternatives is not the purpose of this post. The purpose of this post IS to identify components to set up a rifle chambered specifically in the 7.92x33 Kurz. Not even the much vaunted B29 will pull us off the 7.92x33.

Please carry on...
Get one of those Zastava Mini Mausers Century Intl is importing and rebarrel it. Or save up for a semi-auto MP44 clone.

I'm not sure if any of the current Zastava mini mausers coming in are .22-250, but the Remington 799 was.....seems like a 8x33 conversion just waiting to happen. The bolt face is already the correct size and the mag box should be pretty close also. I always thought a 150 gr load worked up with the help of quickload to modern pressures would be a handy deer load.

What coldcase1984 said; the Zastava mini-mauser action is the one for this.

Personally, I think this is an outstanding idea; wish I thought of it first. I really hope you do it. That's such a cool little cartridge.

Hmmm... I would think a Zastava M85 mini-mauser chambered in 7.62x39 would make an easy enough platform to rechamber to 7.92x33 kurz without too much fuss...

I just bought a lovely Husqvarna FN with a 24" barrel in 8X57 today.

It would be pretty hard to find a much softer-recoiling big game rifle when using the anemic factory ammo loaded on this continent, yet still be able to use more powerful ammo when one wanted to. Some of the European ammo is the real stuff!

The 200 gr Partitions or 198 gr Matrix loaded to 2700 fps aren't bad either. smile

You might consider one for your son. The Swede cost me less than the barrel job for your Kurtz will.
