I was breaking down a used Mark V I just purchased this afternoon, and noticed some unusual inletting. This is a wood stock, with a recoil lug slot quite a bit forward on the stock. It's been inletted, but the Mark V recoil lug goes into the normal lug recess (which has not been inletted). The area around the receiver just looks rough. And I really don't know what to think about the forward recoil recess. Do you guys think this is safe to shoot, or try something else.

I believe the 460 Weatherbys came with a barrel mounted recoil lug. Some of their other boomers may have it too.

This is a .300 Weatherby

But is it the original stock?

I figured the barreled action wasn't for a 460 or whatever or you'd already know what the extra lug slot was for.

mathman, I don't have ananswer to that. The person I purchased it from is one of many owners. What are your thoughts?

Glass bed the reciever area, allow the barrel to free float, and enjoy your 300WBY without worrying over the extra recoil lug hole that has no effect on the rifle otherwise.

Very few manufacturers put a lot of effort into making the parts of a stock that is not seen when assembled, look very good.

My take would be a Wby stock inletted for the big boomers, now finding itself on a .300.

This is not a .460 stock.
The Weatherby additional recoil mortice is closer to the action than this one and larger in dimension. I'd say this has been added, this, and the fact that the.300 is not the same barrel contour as the larger number 3 and 4 contours for eh .378, .416 and .460.

Do as Safariman suggests and ignore it and enjoy your rifle.
