Gentlemen,

Please provide your suggestions for the best large capacity (rifles) fire resistant safe with a manual combination lock. There are some very long barreled guns to be stored.

Cordially,

Jim Stewart

I have recently traded in a couple of my midsize safes for a 60 gun from Liberty. It is rated for 1200 degrees for 45 minutes and has 13 locking bolts. Comes in at just under a thousand pounds and has 16 slots for long guns over 38 inch barrels will fit to the top of the second shelf. I am pleased with its overall design, though the front slots can be difficult for some rifles to get in. It also comes with a conversionpiece to change the dimensions to 43 gun and have some easier to remove slots incorporated. Ryan

Get a used office safe. They go for about $500. Just call a safe dealer or locksmith. Here is one thats over 6' being delivered to my kids house.

If you buying a large safe be sure to measure before buying. I wanted a larger safe but I couldn't get one in the room I put my safe in.

Two gun collectors I know found a chain of jewelry stores going out of business, got hold of the people liquidating the assets, and bought the in-store vaults for a very good price.

One of them did have to have his sliding basement door removed to get it into the house.
fwiw,
I have an 11,000 pound Stainless Doored Diebold that was bought from a local safe dealer. In short I had to set it in the barn and build a reloading room around it. It's a an unusual piece that is certainly impressive, however, if I had to do it over I would buy a first rate commercial gun safe. I have about the same money in the Diebold, however, it's pretty much a land mark that would be a nightmare to move... Never again.

I've been most impressed with Liberty's Presidential safe which is rated at 2.5 Hours at 1200 Degrees F. Though I could easily life with a Fort Knox or even a Heritage...

Regards, Matt.

Jim,I don't know how you would go about finding out about these but a friend got five ATM safes from a bank that was updating their equipment.Free.Roughly 30"D X 48"W X 72"H.They were unable to find a locksmith to open them but after burning through the back and going in that way the smith figured out a combination.

Jim, I have to echo the good things said about Liberty safes. I have two, one medium sized and one large sized Washington series. They're outstanding, and one thing to try is to call a couple of dealers and see if they might have one that they need to move because of (1) time they've had it and haven't sold it, or (2) was specially ordered and the owner backed out.. My large one was obtained under (1). The dealer had had it for quite a while and was desperate to move it. I didn't care what color it was, I just needed a 60 gun safe and this fit the bill. I t came as a dark green and just beautiful. I saved about $500.00 by taking that one over others he had in stock.

Take a look at the Zanotti safes. They are modular, and can be taken through a door that is too small to take them out of. They have a model that is 30" deep, 40" wide. It comes in two heights, 60" and 72" IIRC. There are several interior setups. I am very happy with mine, and my daughter recently bought one as well.

We have a member here who goes by the handle Safeman, he works (maybe owns??) one of the big Safe companies. Do a search for him and send him a PM and/or email with some of your questions. Very knowledgable and nice gentleman.

I bought the largest safe that Fort Knox sells, and it's more fireproof than the rest of my house. It's 1800lbs empty, so it's still movable. I'm not going to compare FK with other companies, but will say that they've got a lifetime warranty against not only product defects, but also burglar damage. If the dial and handle gets pried off and the paint job bunged up, FK will repair/replace for the lifetime of the original owner. I figured that the sooner I bought one the longer the lifetime warranty would be in effect. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
