Three 8x57???

Here it is really a list of Loonie credentials. No 9mm or .380, huh, John? That is a surprise, more than the three 8x57, to me.

Eileen has a 9mm Browning I can borrow when necessary. Never have been interested in the .380, but may have to borrow one to do a handloading column sometime.

Didn't you notice there was no .45 ACP? Had a 1911 for a while, but sold it a few months back to buy something else, because I preferred my H&K .40.

The three 8x57's are an 1888 Gewehr (also known as the "commission" rifle), complete with bayonet, an unaltered K98 made at the Erfurt factory in 1913, and a pre-WWII German custom rifle on a 98 action, with the typical butterknife bolt handle, double-set triggers, light engraving, and a very slim stock with side-panels and Schnabel forend. So they're all kinda different.

The .45 LC is 7-1/2" Bisley Blackhawk, which shoots really well.

Yeah, I have a few lever rifles, but used to have a lot more. Right now I only have a 9422M .22 Magnum, .25-35 1894 Winchester (26" octagon barrel, made in 1898), and a Savage 99F .358 Winchester. Have had a pile of 99's (and a couple of 95 Savages) over the years, but pared them down. Have had a few other Winchesters, including 94's in .30-30 and .32 Special, a 92 in .25-20, and a 71.

But right now my .30-30 is a drilling!

Most of my adult life has been spent in the retail gun business, in two different shops. I have never, and will never, make a lot of money but the perk is that I have been able to get my hands on a lot of "toys". I'm not a "trader" either. I can count on one and a half hands the number of guns I have parted with. If I wanted it bad enough to buy it, I wanted it bad enough to keep it.

Interesting! I probably sell more guns than that each year.

But I buy a lot of mine almost purely for experimentation, whether for the cartridge, the action or just the history. Some I keep, but many I sell or trade after a year or two or even 10, though some I've had for a long time.

When I really have a hard time going to sleep I try and remember how many guns, in which calibers, I own. And where they might be.

Mule Deer is holding out on us. Am I the only one who noticed the glaring gap between the 7mm Weatherby Magnum and the .30-30 WCF?

I�m really low man on this totem pole. I�m including the guns my 14 year old claims but hasn�t been given; I�ll asterisk those, he seems pretty insistent: .22 (2 +1*), 220 Swift, 257 Roberts, 7-08, 7mm RM, 30-06 (3 +1*), 375 H&H, 45�70, 470 NE. .45 ACP & 9mm*. 12 (2) & 20 gauge.
Of these, I want to change the 7-08 out to either a 250 Savage or possibly 358, re-barrel a 06 to 7x57. If I do I'll most likely sell the swift and Roberts. Then I have at least 3 BPCs I want. I also keep telling myself I need a 416.

I can't even get on the field in this game. I'll just sit in the stands and admire.

Thanks. Do I smell an article coming on? Seems like the 8x57 could now easily be a do-it-all round with the newer lightweight bullets available. Seems like there is little new under the sun.

You sure avoid the ordinary, don't you - no .223 Rem, .270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, .30-30 WCF, .308 Win, or .30-06. The only one of the top 7 most popular cartridges you have a rifle for is a .243. That has to put you in some kind of elite rifle looney realm. I'm sure your reloading press stays busy.

Yeah, I replaced it with a .264--but may be replacing the .264 with a 26 Nosler.

What I've found myself doing over the past few years is buying two kinds of rifles: really good ones or really cheap ones. I've long had a self-imposed limit of around 50 centerfire rifles, mostly because more just creates too many problems in storage and time to shoot them all. But have upgraded to custom rifles in many instances, or downgraded from mid-range factory rifles to real bargains like the Ruger American, which shoot just as well as many customs at a fraction of the cost.

I used to own at least two rifles in most chamberings, one a fancy model and one a plainer factory model to hunt with, so I didn't "damage" the fancy one. But eventually I discovered I was hunting with the fancy one anyway (which didn't really damage them much) so got rid of a lot of unused "using" rifles.

On the list of my centerfires, over half are very high-grade factory or customs rifles. The others usually cost $500 or less, either because I bought 'em used for a very good deal, or that's what they cost retail. Right now I have three Ruger Americans and may buy another!

The rifles I have were either someone special to me's gun and I have keep it for that reason or a gift from Santa Claus as a youngster. Except for a long action 700 that has been rearranged a half dozen times and a cz24 in .458 win mag. Those two just seem to be here because the 700 is easily reconfigured to something different if the urge strikes. The cz because it fits me like a well worn leather glove and is a hoot to shoot!!!!

Yeah, I'm not much for "bread & butter" cartridges. There actually is a .30-06 in my house that I didn't even list because it is strictly a donor that will be rebarreled. The .243 was my first rifle, given to me by my dear old Dad. My 2nd and 3rd were the .300 H&H & 6.5 Rem Mag, which started my love affair with the not so common cartridges. I've only gotten worse with the passage of time, although my most recent was the common .338 Win, but in a rather spiffy Ruger No.1. Once on a whim, I went into the sporting goods section of Walmart and asked for a box of 9.3x57 for an old Husqvarna and they sent me to the chain saw department! I'm kidding, but that would likely be the reaction. I have no problem with factory ammo if I can get it but I just dare you to find a box of factory 9x57R, so yes, I do have to handload for quite a few of them. Luckily, being in the gun business, I can usually come up with what I need.

I've actually had two .270 Weatherbys. They worked fine, but after shooting them for a while decided I preferred the .257 Weatherby for general use. Also have a 7mm Weatherby now, which is pretty much a .270 Weatherby that can use a little heaver bullets.

They all kill stuff if you point them right....

I am not a gun writer and just fall into the anyone category, but when you buy a 7x57 in a semi-auto just because you don't know anyone with a 7x57 semi-auto and it's a cool rifle, you might be a loony. When you own somewhere north of ten .30-06s and don't love the cartridge but like the various rifles, you might be a loony.

When you randomly wake up one morning realize you've sold or traded all your M70s so decide to start buying every major caliber of pre64 M70, you might be a loony.

When you have dozens of rifles and only hunt with one or two consistently, you might be a loony.

When you buy special rifles for special planned hunts, but when the hunt comes around, you leave the special rifle at home and use the one or two rifles you always use, you might be a looney.

When you keep thinking an M2 or 1919 would make the ultimate hog gun, you might be a loony.
