I've recently bought a supply of Nosler 168 gr. custom competition bullets for practice shooting with a 30/06 and a 308. I have no intention of hunting with them but if I'm out on the farm shooting and get a shot at a coyote, I'd likely take it and was just wondering how these bullets would react. Would they come apart or pencil through without expanding? Has anyone ever tested the expansion characteristics of these or similar bullets?
Not a coyote or 30-06, but during some practive sessions, my buddies 308, loaded with Varget and 168 Nosler CC's (2750 FPS) just penciled through 1 gallon jugs at 200 and 300 yards.
If you want expansion, switch to the Ballistic Tip, or a Berger. If you just want to kill a coyote, shoot it with whatever you have handy, but aim well.
Shot 1 doe deer years ago with a 168 sierra HPBT match king... long tracking job with little blood trail as it appeared the bullet penciled through.
Thanks for the info.
I shot a coyote 2 years ago with Federal gold medal out of a 308. The results weren't good...hit her in the spine between her shoulders, she really couldn't move but she was still alive and not happy at all!
Wasnt the match king used in military sniper rounds at some point?
It still is.
I have killed one bear and a couple yots with them they are unreliable one will nuke the next will open like a core lock then one will zip right on through. Have some pics of the yot can't load them here will load them and post later
