So, I was thinking, as one does with to much time on their hands.. smile

What are your favoritt rifles/actions, in regars to the common cartridge sizes..

Mini : 22lr
Small : 221, 222, 223 based
Medium : 308 based
Large : 30-06 based
Magnum : 375H&H ++ based

My thoughts:

Mini : CZ 453 / BRNO #1
Small : Sako L461
Medium : Sako L579
Large : BRNO ZG-47
Magnum : BRNO 602

My choices are based on: intregral mounts, integral recoil lugs, one piece bolts, nice workmanship, good triggers, built for purpose not price..

Now, I carfully tiptoed around the fact that there are few in between action sizes here. Please list them if you belive they belong there!

Maybe I will learn something new in this post.
"Best" is a strong word. A feature that's an advantage for one purpose may be detrimental for another. You listed some fine rifles, but some, maybe all, are no longer available except used. Integral mounts are great, but not so hot if you can't find rings or they won't let you mount the scope you want. You also completely ignored single shots, levers, and doubles. Etc, etc, etc.

Maybe "favorite" would be a better way to go.
For the hunting I do, which isn't a lot, I've found the 338-06 is perfect for me.
My current rifles jump from 22LR to .30, then .338 (several of those), and up to .45.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Muzzle loaders are all .50.
I was hot to trot on mountain rifles, especially my 260. If I were to start over though, it'd be a little over sporter contour and in a McMillan classic.
Winchester 1885 or Remington Hepburn
Mini : 22lr

Remington 700 with a couple Pre 64 Winchesters.
Small : 221, 222, 223 based
Medium : 308 based
Large : 30-06 based
Magnum : 375H&H ++ based

Have found that simple just works.
Custom clones of the Remington 700
Wby Mk V
1885
Mini - Rem 552 - digests any length 22 rimfire (except WMR)
Small - AR platform or H&R type of single shot
Medium - Tikka - accuracy out of the box and ability to change the bolt stop to use some longer bullets
Large - 700 or 70. Toss in the Howa/Vanguard in this one as well. Could also add in the Ruger single shots in this.
Magnum - Blaser R-series or 700/70 types of actions, Weatherby Mk V action works well also.
Nor..,

For me a serious hunting rifle must be Mauser based.
I used a 1936 Mex.Mau for my 7x57
An FN #5 for my 300H&H
A 1903 for my30/06
For other standard rounds Mark X or Doumlin

O
I have an intermediate Mauser action that will probably become a 7X57, or maybe a .257 Roberts... jim

I would say almost all bolt action rifles are Mauser based.

"Best" is very subjective... Of course we all know that. Here's how I roll:

Mini: 22 LR/ Ruger 10-22
Intermediate Rimfire: Ruger 77/22 or Ruger American 22 magnum
Small centerfire: .223 rem. Ruger Hawkeye
Medium centerfire: Pre 64 Winchester model 70 270 fwt.
Large centerfire: 9.3x62mm CZ 550 American
Magnum: Pre 64 model 70 338 Alaskan or 375 H&H
Mini : Marlin 56 Levermatic
Small : Savage 340
Medium : Mossberg 800
Large : Remington 710
Magnum : Beretta Mato
A 710 ?

Ok, I'll play.

Mini : 22lr

Medium : 308 based
Large : 30-06 based
Magnum : 375H&H ++ based

My thoughts on an ideal battery, with a twist of heavy/light. The actions are the same for both in each category so it counts. smile :

Mini : Anschutz 1907 and 1712 --- .22 LR -- 40 grain
Small : Kimber 84M Pro Varmint and Montana --- .223 Rem -- 50-62 gr (1:9)
Medium : Winchester M70 Stealth and FWT SS --- .308 Win -- 125-150 gr (1:12)
Large : Winchester M70 Super Grade and FWT SS --- .30-06 Sprg -- 180-220 gr (1:10)
Magnum : Winchester M70 Safari and Alaskan SS --- .375 H&H -- 270-350 gr (1:?)

Easy to tell I like CRF Mauser style stuff as I've had mediocre luck with push feeds. I also like common cartridges and components. If I had to hunt in France I would choose a .270 Win, otherwise I would like to share bullets and powders between the .308/.30-06. I think Kimber should make a sporter style stainless .223 with a barrel contour between the Montana and the Pro Varmint.

I think John mentioned it one time but the 3.0in MRC action would be perfect for a 7x57, 338-08, .358. powdr
For any of them, it is hard to beat a break action or falling block, just upsize the action to suit the cartridge and gun weight wanted. Look at the Rook rifles, Stevens, New Win Low Walls,#1's or 3's, Hagn, Merkel/Blaser break actions, A&D boxlocks and various sidelocks.
For hunting I have 2 Sako's, for targets and range toys Tikka T3's, because they are accurate with out fanfare.
Small-BSA Cadet Martini

Medium;Kimber SS 84M

Large-standard rounds to .30-06-Brno 21/22 series

Large-standard length such as 9.3x62/64-Brno ZG-47

Magnum-Dakota African

For damned good factory rifles/actions, in .270Win/.338WM, the original P-64 Fwts and Alaskans, with good synthetic stocks and Talley QDs. Easy to find/buy, very accurate and reliable and simple to customize oneself.
Howa's new mini action is pretty slick. They should have put more thought into the mag box though. if some after market stuff surfaces soon, it could be King.

If I had to pick one action for the 308 family, it would be the push feed Model 70's. I like the lug, mag box, open trigger, three position safety..

It's hard to go wrong with any of the big names for the '06 family. They all have merit, but I'm still a fan of open triggers -- maybe a three position safety and a claw extractor? Remington's are nice too.

I like most everything....unless it will only accept OptiLock rings/bases.
