Ever since I acquired my Oehler 35P I've been looking for something as accurate without the headache of setting it up. I've been reading some positive reviews of the LabRADAR unit. Anyone have any commentary or hands on? This looks like a real step forward IF it is as accurate as the Oehler...

I'm up to speed on the magnetoSpeed...

Jury is out on edge cases such as tiny projectiles or swarms. I don't know clock speeds or radio frequencies for accuracy limits or RFI. Otherwise good enough by comparison for all normal use. The 35P is still the standard for published work

Thank you, however, I had already read that review. That was largely my introduction to the unit. I am getting the feeling it may benefit from a wee bit more beta testing. That said it sounds quite promising...

I haven't invested in one because of the concerns about tiny bullets. I've found the 35P, Magnetospeed and even the $100 ProChrono Pal pick up 17-grain .17 bullets just fine. If the Labradar gets to that point, it sure would be attractive.

Saw one at work this past Sunday, with 3006 and a 7 Mag. I was impressed. Easy to use and it gives you lots of instant handy data, and no need to mess with screens etc, and most importantly, you can't SHOOT it!

Do they state where the radar senses the bullet and makes the velocity determination? Is it very close to the muzzle, or at some range? Is it always the same, or at least close enough? What range can it detect out to (for a .30 cal for example)? Can it be set up to determine velocity at longer ranges, or even better, at multiple range intervals? (That would be cool!)
Having taught radar theory, I can appreciate what they are doing, but it does open some questions.

It will pick up velocity at user determined ranges, it doesn't always pick them all up as the positioning of the unit relative to the target is fairly sensitive.

Going to try to download the new firmware to see if it will pick up 22 caliber bullets, 24 caliber and up works great.

So far I'm happy with the Labradar but it does have it' catches.... As MD pointed out, 17 cal.. forget it. So Far anyway. Mine picked up a 17 once out of three shots. It read the one it caught accurately but doesn't work well there.
22's havn't been a problem but do not get the readings much past 50 yards. 6.5's I've gotten readings out to 125 yards.

Thanks for the news on the .17's. Guess I'll wait a while....

I don't think I'll hold my breath until Labradar gets the 17 cal problems worked out. Not sure they are even trying but they could be. That's a very small bullet base to find and that's what it's looking for. Unlike the side of the bullet that the typical chrono's work with.

It's not difficult to get spoiled using the Labradar with most cartridges though. The ease of setup/takedown and retrieving the info to a spread sheet after the shooting is done. I like that... a lot..

This thing is very new though and not too sure about longevity. It could go belly up sooner than I'd like. At the moment that's an unknown...

That is a biggie with me... Blessed thing was missing 75 grain A-Max's because they did not have a flat base according to Bryan Litz. Supposed to have been fixed in the firmware, however, that is a lot of bullet to "miss" so speak... Will be waiting on the sidelines for them to work the bugs out... That or I find the right spot to shoot where I can leave a set of Oehler 57 proof channels set up permanently...

Where did you read that about Litz having problems with 75gr A-Max?

I have seen on Accurateshooter.com where it did not track his cheap 55gr FMJs due to the non-flat, cupped base, but he got perfect results on 69gr BTHPs. Someone else in the same thread posted results from 75gr A-Max, with no mention of problems.

The same basic review information is pasted on many shooting sites all over the net.

65X54, just out of curiosity, what were the .17 cal bullets you tried?

Olong, was shooting some 20 gr Dogtown HP's/flat base out of a 17 hornet. Velocity that it did read was as ecpected, 3600 and change...

The latest version 1.1.3 works in my unit, picking up 223 bullets no problem.

Mine showed up on Friday, shot it today. I missed 2 out of 25 shots w/75 A-max's, one each @ 223AI and 22-250 velocities. Buddy showed up and it picked up 9 of 10 20cal V-max's (not sure what weight) from his .20 Practical as well. Pictured w/my 30" 7WSM shooting 162's and 26" 223AI shooting 75's.

I love my Labradar, but I don't shoot .17 or .20 and could care less if it picks them up. .223 works splendidly. It's made my 35P feel awfully unloved...

On public ranges, do they have problems picking up shots from the benches beside you?

It's been a lot of years since I've shot at a public range so no first hand experience there but I doubt it. They are tripped by the muzzle blast of the rifle within about one foot distance. There are adjustments for sensitivity there..

I didn't have this problem with mine per se. Mine sometimes would not pick up one of my shots when someone was shooting next to me. Problem was operator error on my part as I had the trigger level sensitivity set to high. Once I adjusted it down the unit had no problem picking up all my shots with someone shooting next to me.

Velocity numbers I've been getting from the LR on everything from my .223 to .300 RUM have been pretty accurate to date.
