I have been watching hunting programs for some time and I am very curios as to what is in these big back packs?
They drive their truck within 100 yards of a deer stand and 2 or three of them get out and put large back packs on and walk to a heated completely furnished with cooking facilities house on stilts shoot a deer 50 yards away then all bail out of the shack with packs on back hooting and hollering I really think this bull crap gives the true sportsman a very negative appearance. what ever happened to the American sportsman? what is in them back packs? these programs give a very negative opinion of the hunter. last and not least these yahoos that hunt exotic animals in a gated community in Texas and other states?? give me a break. Been hunting over 70 years and never saw the likes of it.

They wax...
The best hunting show I have seen was on guns and loads for the TV.

Settled on the 12 gauge shooting plan old steel #4's and have not been bothered since.

It also helps to boycott the sponsors of that crap.
Knife, torch, raincoat. I walk all day for a deer. I am not carrying a comb around.

To be honest, when I have seen this on American shows, I assumed it was video camera gear. Perhaps I am naïve.

The shows I watch have them taking their big backpacks up the stairs into their Texas deer blinds...

Always wondered what was in there too....

What's the comb for?
Not sure what is in there, but darn sure whats not. Books by the likes of Finn, Jack, Earnest, Zane or even John….
My suspicion is, the But Out, may be on the list with the Garmin for finding ones way.

I use a good quality student size backpack. Contents are: toilet paper, a few paper towels, a small pack of handy wipes, knife, compas, matches or disposable lighter, string or cord, a few rounds of ammo, knife, compas, binocular (if not around my neck), water, snacks (usually nuts and apple), surgical gloves, scissors, small bug repellent, a few band-aids, sunscreen, a few plastic bags, and perhaps some things I have forgotten. There may be a small radio with ear buds if I'm going to sit in a "luxury Texas tower." Football games still happen!

Additionally, I will have duct tape in my hunting vehicle, and perhaps in the pack. We were once chasing scaled quail in the desert. Our driver ran over a small mesquite and a broken branch pierced the oil filter. I cleaned the filter, sealed the hole with duct tape, added a quart of oil, and the hunt was back on. Good thing, civilization was a good 8-10 miles away and we had a couple of seniors aboard. We made it to a mine where the shop gave us an oil change and a new filter. West Texas Hospitality!

Note that we are not talking Costco size rolls of toilet paper or quart size bug spray and sunscreen. 2 - 2 1/2" of TP still on the roll is plenty, then mash it flat to save space. A 2 or 3 oz tube/bottle of sun and bug protection is enough.

Good hunting,

Jack

The answer - toilet paper!
Such "hunters" require vast amounts of it.

You just described deflaves pack shocked

Hmmm...I don't usually carry a backpack, but when I do it has my license and possession tag, a flashlight, apples, a knife, maybe binos, maybe a GPS, ty-wraps to attach the possession tag, latex/vinyl gloves and a couple chemical hand warmers. No combs.

If I am going to be on TV I will reconsider the comb.

Check on line and search Wapati Foirdland New Zealand (Wapati are your Elk) for some ideas on light weight packs and equipment etc. These guys head out for 7-10 days and on their first day some might "climb" for 10hrs! Haven't done it myself but Kudos to them. Some of the ballet blocks you can fly into but others are strictly beating the feet!

I hunt a fair distance from my parking area and like to stay out all day so Depending upon the weather I have extra layers of clothing or rain gear, a camp stove for coffee & lunch, and lots of water.

If you are hunting Colorado it's Coors light, not sure about other areas. smile

1 Mt Goat Boned out and hauled 23 miles to the strip. That pack weighs about 150lbs+.
Quite a bit.I carry an extra jacket usually, my spotting scope and tripod, meat saw, rope , matches,, flashlight and batteries, map, spare rounds, game calls , sharpening stone, gloves and extra gloves, extra socks, extra silk neckerchief and a Leatherman. I don't hunt without a backpack.
Butt-out tool, scent blocker, boot powder, moistened towelettes, jiffy pop - it all takes room.
For elk hunting a few miles from any motorized vehicle, water, rain gear, extra layer, flashlight, batteries, game bags, tags, a few rounds of ammo, space blanket that can be used as a ground cloth for meat, lunch, extra hat & gloves, boning knife, band aids, bug spray, duct tape, cell phone for photos and a paperback novel.

I keep changing to get to perfect but I'm not there yet. For hunting deer not far from the truck fanny pack with water. It's easy to get a couple miles into a hunt and be very thirsty.

I'm thinking they carry 90% of the stuff so they can get it "in frame" to drum up sponsors. You have to have noticed the labels are always facing the camera. How about the guys hunting with the stickers still on the gun? It's all a commercial.

When I'm close to the truck I rarely have anything along that won't fit in pockets. If I bring a pack i'm leaving the area & gone for the day.
Coffee,Small maglight,My Dad's old large Case folder (pure superstition),Drag rope and one of those funky little Wyoming knife things I've carried for 5 years and never once remembered to use.
I wondered the same thing and figured it was for some of their video recording equipment.
Usual stuff I guess; T-P, small flashlight, extra socks, saw, rope. Normal things.
But, I always wondered why those "hunters" were all camoed up when they're in some kind of blind! Like someone said: Sponser's.
and tissue
In my opinion, those shows are all about showing and selling gear, and booking expensive hunts. Period.

A pack frame here. Inside of the lashed on game bags one will find my lunch/snacks and a water bottle. Possibly a rain coat if there is threatening weather.
Thermocell, water, snacks, TP, ammo, flashlight, knife.
Inside of my 'walking' backpack is a folding Wyoming saw, gallon zip-lock bags, about a 10' piece of rope, roll of TP, roll of surveyor tape, parachute cord, Life Straw bottle, small LED light, an airline bottle of Jameson, and a cigar. I hunt day trips 99% of the time.

If I am hunting out of a stand, I just pull the Prius into the garage and fire up the generator and watch re-runs of Elmer Fudd and play Duck Hunt on my Atari.

geedubya,

Those adjustable bungee cords look VERY useful!

Could you post the brand name or a link where they could be purchased so that I can get some?

John
Sir,

I buy them at Home Depot! IIRC they are about $9 for the 24 pak.

[Linked Image]

There are several different iterations but the 24 pack has 4 of the adjustable bungees per pack.

[Linked Image]

Be sure and check the pack to see which one. The SKU number in the pix below has the yellow cord bungee. I prefer the ones with the yellow bungee to the orange bungee due to the type of "fastener' that secures the bungee. I've used them for years and the "fastener" on yellow bungee on the left is way better for my applications.

[Linked Image]

I also use the two other for securing game cameras, as tie downs, on electric cords and countless other ways.

anywho, they work for me!

MANY thanks for taking so much trouble to make such a complete post!

I will be getting some of those!

John

My pleasure.

Best,

GWB
Thanks, I'll be getting them as well.

I also bring a half a roll of TP, usually in a ziplock to keep it dry and as an extra baggie for a deer heart, besides the 2 gallon x2 for liver.

I bring 2 bottles of water, one for clean-up if needed, one to consume. Jerky, dried fruit, Grandpa's old hunting knife for good luck, towels, both paper and a cloth one, fire starter and material , head lamp and small flashlight, electric tape, string to put tags on the horns, straps made for dragging deer, usually a "final " handgun, as a back-up if I have rifle troubles.

I always have a gallon or 2 of store bought ( or refilled from home- use them for the coffee pot- too much calcium in our tap water) water in the back of my truck, for clean-up, drinking, etc. Those thin- with strap- jugs are pretty convenient to keep in the truck bed.

Also one of the zip-saws with rings on both ends. Essentially an abrasive rope of stainless, made to cut the pelvic bone, but works well for other things and rolls into a 1.5" circle and light.

I think that is it

Agreed.

If they were actually showing your typical (successful)local Western hunter, they would show a pack that is at least 10 years old, with no shortage of blood stains, and a hunter in either Carhartts, Wranglers, or Army surplus wool pants for snowy weather.

In the pack you'd find a knife that is probably 20 years old, a sharpener, bone saw, well used meat bags (to keep the quarters clean) sack lunch, some rope/bungee/550 cord, matches, disposable lighter, TP an old Gore-tex or similar waterproof shell, and other no label basic stuff.

The hunter would be packing a rifle that he has used for numerous seasons, and an older set of binoculars.

It does not take a designer label to put a bullet through the lungs of your typical elk.

For me, it's all about carrying water. I get really thirsty, and if I don't drink enough, I'll trigger a migraine the next day.
