Just finished reading my latest Rifle magazine and thought I would take the time to respond with my thoughts on Terry Wieland as a writer. I am really enjoying reading his articles. I think one of the reasons is that I have always been a history buff and his articles touch on the subjects past in a way that I like. He also writes on firearms that are unique, ones that are not talked about very often. Ones that are classics, high dollar ones that I will never get to own, or even handle for that matter, but he goes into detail about why they are classics. Not just this power charge and that bullet with this primer, and that's all good to, (especially if you have one and are looking for load data), but who made them, details about the people that were involved in the making of them, their background and even delving into their personal lives at times. The guns he writes about, how they function, how the cartridge they fire came to be. It's interesting. This article I just finished titled "Private Rifles" struck a cord with me being an endowment life member of the N.R.A., he lays it on the line, tells it like it is. It is amazing that some countries just can't seem to catch on even after a close call from a foreign enemy. Like the close call England had in WWII. like it or not terrorism is coming, sooner or later, and the U.S.A. may be the only country that may have a chance to defeat it simply because the armed U.S. citizen will at least have an opportunity be able to take care of themselves. I don't know if Terry hangs out on the Campfire or not, but if you do Terry, keep up the good and interesting articles. I enjoy them. RRM

When I first came upon Terry's writing I was a bit skeptical, I thought he might be snob, a little too upper-crustic. But I've come to enjoy his articles very much. He does have a different perspective and it is a highly informed one. Kudos on Terry Wieland.

He's a transplanted Ontario boy. He moved to the US to pursue his writing and live the dream. I think he's enjoying himself.

Another fan, here.... Who at first was also a bit skeptical because my first impression was that his stuff was gonna be too far above my "down to earth" interests but I've come to really like Terry's down to earth perspective and detailed analysis of stuff I'll never even get to see because it's too rare, and / or high priced or just plain obscure. Even the plain everyday guns I can relate to get a well done, interesting and informative story that's often interspersed with tales of personal experience.

I enjoy his work as well. If you like his magazine articles, you really should read his book, A View From A Tall Hill.

I enjoy his writing; it appears that's about as close as they could get to Ross Seyfried, without having to have Ross Seyfried...

That's actually a pretty good thing.

Have known Terry for many years, and he's also a lot of fun to sit and BS with, whether about firearms, hunting or stuff.

........... I've also noticed some similarities with Ross and I like that. I bet Terry would be great to BS with. I even recall seeing him on TV once back in the early 1990's but I can't recall the show or who else was on it. They were antelope hunting and generally talking with each other and it was real genuine normal type stuff instead of some of the weird crap seen on modern hunting shows.

Great summation - I am a fan of both Seyfried and Wieland, they both have a unique style that I really enjoy reading.

He is a great writer.

I like TW's writing quite a lot. Would enjoy a hunt with him and to talk by the campfire. I am reading his book on Dangerous-Game Rifles-Second Edition-. I'm alternating between that and Quartered Safe Out There, by George MacDonald Fraser and the Bible.

I'm also reading in both of Mule Deer's books on gun gack. Rusty

I loved the article on Stevens single shot rifles. My only criticism is that he didn't mention that Stevens 44-1/2 rifles are currently being produced by CPA. Paul and Gail Shuttleworth's rifles are true works of art and quite comparable in quality to the originals, if not superior because of better steel technology.

He bought one of my books several years ago. He was very gracious, and we had several emails back and forth. He had been in Ohio for a while then, and had become a US citizen.

He is one that f the best journalists and writers currently in the business. His topics and photographs are also very good.

Agree with Phil. I had a pretty healthy email exchange with him in 1995 regarding a particular Spanish sidelock 20 bore I was eyeballing. He was very helpful.

I really enjoy Wieland’s work as well. His books are well worth owning. I refer to them often.

He's one of my favorites also, but I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to post about what we like, only about what we don't.

For a brief time he was either a member or just attended at our local gun club. I got to shoot skeet once with him and started under the assumption he was a newcomer to the sport. I tried to outline how the game was shot but as soon as he started breaking birds I could see he was no beginner. Later after I found out his name and realized who he was I was completely embarrassed in thinking I had anything to explain to him. He was a quiet, unassuming guy and I was sorry he didn't show up more so I could have gotten to know him better. At the time I think he must have been in the process of moving through.

I also enjoy his writing, and he's also very pleasant in person. My wife and I were on the same flight to Johannesburg as he and his lady, and had a pleasant brief chat at OR Tambo.
